Alison Asher made a quick transition from the court to the sidelines as the 2002 University of Portland graduate takes over as assistant coach for ISU.
Asher, a native of Coeur d'Alene, was a standout for the Pilots over the last four years, earning four letters. As a senior Asher played in all 28 games, making 26 starts and led the team in blocks with 45. She was fourth on the squad in rebounds with 98. During her career she played in 76 games for the Pilots and scored 146 points, while pulling down 205 rebounds. She also had 71 career blocked shots.
As a high school player Asher set records for Lake City High School over her four years. As a senior Asher led the team to a 25-1 record and the Idaho State Basketball Tournament. During her four years at LCHS the team advanced to the state tournament four times and she was a three-time all-state selection. A tremendous defensive player, Asher still holds the Idaho high school state record for blocked shots in a career with 496. Asher also played volleyball and golf at LCHS.
"I'm very excited to begin my college coaching career here with Idaho State and Coach Newlee," Asher said. "I came here because I thought that it would be a good opportunity for me to get my foot in the door. I feel that I'm ready to begin the journey that I've always dreamed of."
This will not be Asher's first coaching assignment. While in high school Asher was an assistant coach for the highly successful AAU Spokane Stars from 1997 to 1999. Asher also worked with the University of Portland basketball camps during her four years at the school.
"I'm absolutely delighted to have Alison join our staff," Newlee said. "The knowledge she gained playing for (Portland) Coach Jim Sollars will be a big asset to our program. She brings a tremendous background, enthusiasm, and passion for the game."
Asher comes from a very athletic family. Her father, Jim, played on the 1972 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team and later for the San Antonio Spurs. Her sister, Melissa, played golf at Boise State University.
