Michiko Tanaka has been named assistant coach of the Idaho State men's and women's teams in August 2007. She comes to Idaho from South Carolina where she served as the Assistant Coach of the men's and women's teams at Newberry College.
While coaching at Newberry College, Tanaka received the NCAA Female Minority Grant for coaching development, was selected for Division II Coaching Enhancement Grant Pilot program in the South Atlantic Conference, attended the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) International Symposium at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and graduated from the NCAA Women Coaches Academy in Indianapolis.
Before coaching at Newberry College, Tanaka served as the Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Western New Mexico University while earning a Masters degree in Counseling and Educational Leadership.
Tanaka earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication in 2004 from the University of Hawaii at Hilo after competing three seasons on Hawaii-Hilo's collegiate tennis team. She recorded 48 wins in singles for the Vulcans on the No. 1 and 2 spots and only lost 15 times during her three years of play.
In 2003, Tanaka was elected First Team of the Pacific West Conference and reached All-American status in doubles after finishing the 2002-03 season at No. 10 in the NCAA Division II national doubles ranking. She became Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player in singles and doubles, and received the Most Dedicated Athlete award from the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
In 2004, Tanaka qualified with the team for the NCAA National Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida and finished the season with a national singles ranking at No. 31 and a team ranking at No. 9 in the NCAA Division II. The athletic director of her alma mater awarded Tanaka the Award for Effort and Achievement at the end of her senior year. In 2005, Tanaka received her MA in Counseling and Educational Leadership from Western New Mexico.
Before Hawaii-Hilo, Tanaka was a student-athlete at the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif. In 2001, she was the Singles Champion of the Ojai Valley tennis tournament in Ojai, Calif. and finished 3rd in the ITA Rolex National Championships in Doubles in Memphis, Tenn. Tanaka was ranked No. 1 among California Community Colleges in singles and doubles, was awarded ITA National Rookie Player of the Year, and All-American in singles and doubles at College of the Desert the same year.
Coach Tanaka is married to Idaho State's men's and women's tennis coach Richard Korneck. She resides with her husband in Pocatello while pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in physical education and athletic administration from Idaho State University.
