After high school, Krieg stopped running and took up climbing and found interest in other outdoor activities He's scaled crags in Yosemite National Park, Spain, Thailand, Patagonia and many other places.

In 2002 Sam discovered a passion for cycling! It started on the mountain bike and quickly evolved into a passion for road racing and cyclocross. If it has two wheels and a finish line, you'll see him at the starting line with a huge grin and a full tank of fuel ready to go!

His wife, Karen Appleby, a vice provost at Idaho State University, is also an avid runner. He has lived in Pocatello since 2005!
