POCATELLO, Idaho- The legacy of All-American punters continues at Idaho State as Bengal junior David Harrington was named to the 2010 Walter Camp Football Championship Subdivision All-America Team. Harrington is the second ISU football player to earn All-American honors as Tavoy Moore was named first-team All-American by the AFCA.
Harrington is the eighth Idaho State kicker since 1998 to earn an All-American honor. He finished the 2010 season first in the Big Sky and nation in punting with an average of 44.35 yards a kick. His longest punt was 60 yards and he had 20 of 50 yards or longer while pinning opponents inside the 20 13 times. Earlier, Harrington earned first-team All-Big Sky honors.
“This means a lot,” Harrington said. “All my hard work is paying off. I had great coaches and a great punt team. I couldn't have done it without them.”
It is the second straight the Bengals have had a punter on the Walter Camp All-American Team as Jon Vanderwielen received the honor last year. Harrington is the sixth Bengal this decade to be honored by the Walter Camp Foundation.
In all, players from twelve different conferences and 24 institutions were represented on the 2010 Walter Camp FCS All-America team. The Big Sky and Southern Conferences had the most selections with 4 selections each. The Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Conference each had 3.
Two schools - Appalachian State and Stephen F. Austin (2) - had multiple players selected.
Walter Camp, “The Father of American Football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
