Bengals Finish First Fall Scrimmage

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Monday afternoon inside Holt Arena. The offense scored one touchdown on the last drive of the scrimmage, Zak Johnson was two-for-two on field goals and the defense forced three turnovers.

Coming into the scrimmage Bengal coach Mike Kramer said he wanted to see improved play from his safeties and afterwards he said the position made great strides during the scrimmage.

"The thing I am looking for is safety play and our safety play got pretty good," he said. "Daniel Roundtree played pretty well. He will be a great addition to our backend."

Roundtree is a sixth-year senior who transferred from SMU and after eight practices he has impressed the Bengal coaching staff.

"He needs to have first team reps because I believe he is going to be a starter for us," Kramer said. "He can really run. He has great knowledge and he has great maturity being a sixth-year guy who has already graduated from SMU. He understands the sport and spacing of where he needs to be. His vision is good. His diagnoses ability is really good. I like what he is going to add to our team."

The first-team offense had four drives in the scrimmage two drives resulting in Johnson field goals and another resulting in a fumble.

Johnson connected on kicks of 35 and 34 yards.

"Zak is really kicking like a varsity kicker," Kramer said. "He did not kick that way in the spring. He gave me a lot of sleepless nights this summer. He came back and he is a lot more confident and aggressive to the ball. He is thumping it very well."

Joe Martin and Cory Hollowell picked off Tanner Gueller during the scrimmage and Jakori Ford scored the touchdown.

"I think we have a long ways to go defensively," Kramer said. "Our tackling wasn't very good. We didn't put pressure on the quarterback on a consistent basis and we didn't win the line of scrimmage like a good football defensive front is going to do. We had some nice runs in their by the one's, two's and three's. We can't play 62 plays good and two plays bad and it ends up in the touchdown."

Notes: Freshman Tate Razor has moved to tight end. Justin Arias completed 10 passes on 17 attempts for 122 yards. KW Williams caught five passes for 65 yards and Madison Mangum caught three passes for 30 yards. Jakori Ford caught two passes for 33 yards and scored the scrimmages only touchdown. James Delacenserie, Tanner Gueller and Trae Pilster also saw time at quarterback. Daniel McSurdy had the scrimmages longest run, a 21-yarder.
