POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball team started the 2010-11 season off in an impressive manner as it defeated Loyola Marymount 63-55 on Friday evening at Reed Gym.  It is the first time since the 2003-04 season that Idaho State has won a season-opener when they defeated Lewis & Clark 104-51.

ISU was led in scoring by freshman Lindsey Reed who had 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of play. She was seven-of-15 from the field, including three-of-five from the 3-point line.

"She's talented,” Idaho State coach Seton Sobolewski said.  “There is no question about that.  She's a scorer and if she's open she can knock it down.  She has a good feel for the game.  I think we'll see great thinks out of her for years to come."

Chelsea Pickering had 19 points and six rebounds in 36 minutes of play. ISU shot 39 percent from the floor and held LMU to 29 percent shooting, forcing 23 turnovers. The rebounding margin was close as the Lions had 46 boards to 45 for the Bengals.

Kaela Oakes, a 5-5 sophomore guard and Ashleigh Vella each had seven rebounds  to go along with Reed's eight.  Oakes also had seven points and four assists.

"If you have a 5-5, 5-4 point guard who can pull down seven boards that's tremendous,” Sobolewski said.  “That just shows you it's a team effort.  We really worked hard on our rebounding this past week.  We knew it was going to be something that LMU would try and cause us problems with.  We're very proud of her effort."

Idaho State never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 18 points at 52-34 with 6:14 left in the game.

ISU jumped out to a 15-4 lead seven minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by Andrea Blodgett with 12:59 left in the first half. The Bengals were then stuck on 15 for about a four minute span but a jumper by Pickering with 8:46 left in the half gave Idaho State a 17-9 lead.

Idaho State led 22-11 with 6:40 to play and 32-24 at halftime.

In the second half, LMU was held to only one point in the first four minutes as the Bengals jumped out to a 42-25 lead with 16:16 left in the game. Loyola Marymount got within six points at 58-52 with 40 seconds left to play but LMU would get no closer.

Idaho State returns to the court on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a game at Boise State. ISU returns to Reed Gym  on November 18 against Air Force.
