BOISE, Idaho – Idaho State came out flat in the first half and were unable to recover falling 73-48 to Boise State Sunday afternoon in ISU's first road match of the season at Taco Bell Arena.   Freshman guard Lindsey Reed lead the Bengals with 14 points, her second consecutive contest leading Idaho State.  Freshman forward Cydney Horton chipped in nine points, all in the second half.  Boise State improved to 1-1 while Idaho State fell to 1-1 for the season.

“I don't think our energy level was where it needed to be tonight,” said Head Coach Seton Sobolewski.  “We missed a lot of open shots in the first half, also when we made mistakes on the defensive side I think it affected us offensively.  Some players it gave them an over sense of urgency to get it back all at once, and some people were discouraged.”

“It's a learning experience for the team and it was a game where we were able to play several players and give them real game experience.  I expect these types of things to happen in the preseason; we will have good games and bad and will gain experience for this young team.  Tonight this was our first road game for a team with five freshmen,” said Sobolewski.

The Broncos opened with 12-4 run in the first five minutes.  Freshman Reed turned on the heat hitting 4-of-6 from the field, for nine points in the first 12 minutes of the first half.  Reed posted seven straight points for the Bengals out-scoring the Broncos 7-4 in two minutes of play.

“It was good to see Lindsey as aggressive as she was offensively.  She had a sense of urgency.  She really cared about winning or losing that game and she played really hard.  I thought she was definitely a bright spot,” said Sobolewski.

Reed's 14 points for the game was scored in 35 minutes of play.  She hit 6-of-17 from the field and 2-of-7 from the arc.  She also pulled down five rebounds.

Boise State pushed forward to a 22 point lead with 2:39 remaining for their largest lead of the first half.  Boise State shot 50 percent from the field in the first half. The Bengals were held to 27.3 percent.  Boise State led 43-23 at the half.

Idaho State pushed its intensity in the second half keeping pace with the Broncos being out-scored by only five points, 30-25.  Idaho State improved to 29.4 percent from the field in the second half alone while limiting Boise State to 38.5 percent.

Boise State held its largest lead of 31 points with 11:40 on the clock in the second half ahead 64-33.  The Bengals then put up a 7-4 run in two minutes with Horton putting away her first five points of the game to reduce the BSU lead to 26 points.

With three minutes remaining, the Bengals opened up their offensive opportunities down low to give ISU a 7-1 run against the Broncos with two jumpers from Horton and a layup by sophomore forward Ashleigh Vella.

Horton was 4-of-5 from the field and 1-of-1 from the line for her nine points; all scored in the second half.  She also posted a game-high three blocks.  Vella chipped in two blocks as well to help ISU out-block a taller Boise State 7-to-2.

“Cydney scored some points in the low post for us.  She was able to come in during the second half and get the ball in the low post and score some buckets for us,” said Sobloewski.

Boise State had three players record ten points: Janie Bos, Kati Isham and Nicole Brady.  Brady was 3-of-9 from the field and 2-of-5 from the while Isham was 2-of-6 from the arc.  Both Bos and Isham put up three field goals.

Idaho State returns home to host Air Force on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Reed Gym.  Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m.

Note: Freshman forward Jessica Jensen and freshman guard Sheryl Bitter made her first appearance on the floor for the Bengals.  Bitter posted two points while Jensen recorded a point.  ISU out-scored the Broncos 19-to-14 on second chance points.
