POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State (0-1) women's tennis fell 7-0 to Utah State (1-0) in the Bengals season opener at Reed Gym Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Laura Severino pushed Utah State's Brianna Harris to a tiebreaker in the first set at the No. 6 spot.
Severino fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set, winning four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. She was overcome 7-6 (7-5) in the first set before falling 6-1 in the second after Utah State built momentum.
Junior transfer Laura Porras was overcome 6-2 in the first set by Katrina Voytsekhovich. The Aggie held a break over the Bengal that could not be thwarted as the Bengal fell 7-5 in a tight contest at the No. 3 spot. Porras' match was the deciding contest for the match-up.
“We have a lot of new players here at ISU and they weren't able to compete in several fall tournaments as Utah State was, some of our players did not compete at all. The level of experience isn't the same, but a lot will happen from now until March,” said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz.
The Bengals were overcome 8-3 in each of its three doubles contests to start the match down 0-1. Every Bengal played with their partner for the first time in their careers.
In singles, ISU's Katharina Marsela fell 6-0, 6-2 to Jaclyn West at the No. 1 spot, her first appearance as a Bengal. Junior Rilee Moorhead played her first match at the No. 2 position and was overcome 6-1, 6-0 by Hailey Swenson.
Junior Risa Fujiwara took two games off opponent Romina Nedakovic in each set they played. It was Fujiwara's first appearance at the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Rachel Ryan fell 6-0, 6-0 to Julie Tukuafu at the No. 5 spot.
The Bengals next match will be at Weber State in a non-conference contest on Feb. 9 at 11:00 a.m. The Bengal men open their season tomorrow, Jan. 26, at Reed Gym against the Aggies. The men's match has been moved to 1:30 p.m.
