POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State (12-11, 5-6 BSC) snapped a three-match losing streak and came back in the second set after a nine-point deficit for a dramatic 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-21) victory over non-conference opponent CSU Bakersfield (6-16). Senior middle blocker
Vanessa Muir led the Bengals with an impressive 12 kills, five digs, one assisted block and one solo block. The Smoot, Wyo., native ended the match with 13.5 points and a season-best individual match-high hitting percentage of .625.
“Attack-wise Vanessa played very well,” ISU Head Coach
Chad Teichert said. “It is nice to see a senior with only about one month left of play to have a little fun out there on the court and to perform well.”
The Bengals came out with a vengeance in the first and third sets, shutting down the Roadrunners 25-20 in the first set and 25-21 in the third.
The second set, however, was a different story. Midway through set two, the Bengals saw a nine-point deficit, trailing CSU Bakersfield 11-20. However, a set of serves including an ace by redshirt freshman libero Kylee Searle narrowed the lead to five. Then, with ISU still trailing CSUB 18-22, redshirt freshman outside hitter Danielle Down went to the line for a series that included two aces, bringing the Bengals within two at 22-24.
The Bengals quickly recovered the ball off of a kill from senior setter Karissa Leguax. The two teams battled back and forth, but Legaux went to the service line with the score tied 25-25 and finished the game thanks to some attack errors by CSU Bakersfield's Chelcy Motes and Haleigh Haratyk.
“We were very fortunate to get a couple of good runs there,” Teichert said. “Those runs really put some life back into us. We had some good serving and the team continued to play well and that made for a fun turn around for us.”
Junior middle blocker
Kimberly Naut had a career night, notching a career-high 10 kills and 11 points. Legaux had a season-high 34 assists. Junior outside hitter and defensive specialist
Breanne Van Every was just one kill from recording yet another double-double on the season. Van Every finished the match with nine kills and 10 digs.
The Bengals return to action Saturday, Nov. 5 against conference opponent Sacramento State at Sacramento. The match begins at 8 pm MST.
