“We did a good job of slowing down Kelly Arnold tonight, which was one of our goals,” ISU Head Coach
Chad Teichert said. “However, there were some other players that hurt us tonight. On the bright side,
Vanessa Muir had a good night. My hat goes off to Northern Colorado. They are a very good team. Hopefully we can play better tomorrow.”
In the first set, the Bengals came out cold and allowed the Bears to go on an 8-0 run early in the set leading to a deficit as large as 11 twice during the set. While the Bengals tried to reciprocate, it was just too little too late as the Bengals cut the score to 16-15 after a 10-0 run of their own. However, the Bears battled back and finished the set 25-18.
The second set started with the two teams battling back and forth with a gap no greater than two points in either direction until the score reached 8-6 in favor of the Bears. After that, Northern Colorado went on a few small runs forcing the Bengals to play catch-up. Idaho State rallied to bring the score to within one point three different times after that, the last time being a kill by Muir to bring the score to 20-19 for Northern Colorado. However, NC went on a 4-0 run after that and finished the set 25-20.
The third set also started out very competitively, but the Bears went on to clinch the set and match 25-18.
Tambre Haddock led NC with 11 kills while Marissa Hughes put up 34 assists. Amanda Arterburn recorded 22 digs while Kelly Arnold tallied 11 digs and nine kills, just one kill shy of a double-double. As a team, Northern Colorado recorded a .243 attack percentage on the night.
Northern Colorado now leads the all-time series between the two schools 14-2. Idaho State defeated Northern Colorado 3-2 earlier this season in Greeley. Idaho State faces Northern Arizona tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym.
“It's not easy to play a game the next day after a game like this,” Teichert said. “It can be easy to carry those feelings from the game before into the next day but the girls have to learn from their mistakes, put them behind them and choose to make the next day better.”
