POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State (2-1) defeated Boise State (2-1) for the first time in eight years as the Bengals rolled over the Broncos 84-75 Thursday night in Reed Gym. The last time Idaho State defeated BSU was in November of 2003 when Idaho State routed BSU 97-77 in Pocatello. Junior transfer
Jessa Jeppesen recorded a double-double and led the Bengals with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds.
“It's important in games to get those offensive rebounds and to be able to put the ball back in the basket on second chances,” ISU Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. “People like
Jessa Jeppesen and
Cydney Horton really give you those opportunities.”
Three other Bengals scored in the double digits during the night. Sophomore guard
Lindsey Reed posted 18 points as well as seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Junior forward
Ashleigh Vella recorded 17 points with seven rebounds, seven assists and one steal. Junior guard
Kaela Oakes put up 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Idaho State connected with 28 of 61 shots during the game for a 45.9 shooting percentage. Idaho State also shot 3-17 from the three-point line and 25-31 from the free-throw line. The Bengals pulled down 39 rebounds, with 12 offensive rebounds.
In the first half, Boise State jumped out to an early 9-4 lead but a missed jumper by BSU's Kati Isham led to a Jeppesen rebound and layup to cut the score to 9-6. ISU then converted on a BSU offensive foul by Kinzi Poteet to bring the score within one. The Bengals took advantage of another missed Bronco jumper to take the lead off a layup by Jeppesen and continued to build momentum as they ran out to 10-point (38-28) lead to end out the half.
In the second half, Idaho State's defense worked hard as Boise State struggled to catch up with the Bengals. BSU came within three points at the 7:21 mark after a set of made throws from Nicole Brady, a missed jumper from Vella and then a good layup from Brady again. However, ISU answered with a 4-0 run to bring the lead back to seven and never looked back. The Bengals widened the lead to 12 with 2:23 left in the game and went on to defeat BSU 84-75.
Idaho State's bench continued to be a major asset as it produced 30 points on the night.
“We're trying to sub more to see if we can play a little better by keeping everyone a little fresher,” Sobolewski said. “So that's why I'm having so many people out there and subbing a little more. I'm trying to keep some of the other players a little fresher. Also, those subs are going to develop in their own right into great players. With
Rebecca Schrimpsher,
Blaire Brady and
Abyee Maracigan it's just a matter a time before they come around and I feel that way about a lot of players on our bench.”
Idaho State begins a six-game road stretch Saturday, Nov. 19 as the team travels to Orem, Utah for match-up against Utah Valley. Tipoff is set for 3:05 p.m. MST.
