MISSOULA, Mont. – Idaho State volleyball fell to Montana in five sets (16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 31-29, 13-15) Friday night. Idaho State drops to a record of 14-13, 7-8 BSC while Montana improves to 10-13, 7-8 BSC. Senior middle blocker
Vanessa Muir led the Bengals with a career high 16 kills on the night. Muir also recorded two solo blocks and three assisted blocks on the night.
“Vanessa played very well tonight,” ISU Head Coach
Chad Teichert said. “I wish we had been able to get the ball to her more. Her hitting was very good she just needed to the get the ball a little more.”
Sophomore setter Lori Mendenhall recorded her 10
th career double-double during the match as she posted 50 assists and 15 digs during the evening. The performance also marks Mendenhall's 10
th 40+ assist contest of the season as well as her 22
nd double-figure assist performance for the year.
“Lori is just a very consistent player,” Teichert said. “She gets a lot of digs other players wouldn't. Vanessa was hitting well tonight which helps her in the assist category and her defensive tenacity helps her rack up the digs.”
Three other Bengals recorded double-digit kills during the match. Freshman outside hitter Alydia Fields recorded 13 kills while freshman outside hitter Whitney Bartschi and junior outside hitter
Breanne Van Every both posted 11.
Defensively, freshman defensive specialist Kylee Searle led ISU with 21 kills in the contest. The performance marks Searle's 23
rd double-figure dig match of the season. Two other Bengals also recorded double-figure digs. Redshirt freshman
Danielle Downs pitched in with 11 while redshirt sophomore
Katie Grajewski posted 10.
Idaho State lost the first set to the Grizzlies 25-16 after a slow start and then rallied to take the next set (25-22) to even the score at 1-1. The two squads then battled back and forth again with Montana winning the third set 25-23 and ISU winning a dramatic fourth set 31-29. However, it was Montana that won the deciding set 15-13.
“We did not have our minds in the game,” Teichert said. “It takes a total team effort and you can't be up 23-19 and lose. We have to compete better and compete hard on every play.”
Idaho State wraps up the 2011 season Saturday with a match against Montana State. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m.
