Diego Cavalcanti captured Idaho State's first singles win over Utah since the 2004 season. Cavalcanti defeated Matt Cowley 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 at the No. 5 spot in Idaho State's 6-1 loss at Utah on Wednesday night at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Cavalcanti earned his second straight victory and improved his record to 2-1 at the No. 5 position. On Feb. 27 the Bengal defeated Kyle Koetje of Eastern Washington 6-4, 7-5 to spark the two-game win streak. Cavalcanti has captured three victories this season.
ISU's top singles performer
Nate Gross fell 6-4, 6-4 to Devin Lane at the No. 4 singles position. The Bengals gave a strong fight at No. 3 doubles with
Nate Gross and
Colton Pate falling in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-5) to Dmytro Mamedov and Gino Octa. Mamedov captured the winning singles contest with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over freshman
Gilberto Azevedo at the No. 2 position.
Idaho State fell to 0-9 while Utah improved to 6-5 for the season.
The Bengals next match occurs in Pocatello at the Juniper Hills Country Club when ISU hosts the College of Idaho on Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m.
