POCATELLO, Idaho- A solid defensive effort by Idaho State in the opening game of the Fresno State Bayer Crop Science Classic lifted the Bengals to a 3-1 victory over Troy Thursday evening. The Bengals dropped a late game to Fresno State 1-0 after the Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to earn the win. Idaho State is now 5-10 while Troy dropped to 15-7 and Fresno State improved to 9-4.
In both games the Bengals got solid pitching from
Kandis Clesson and
Christina Rayner.
The Bengals did not commit an error in the field in the win over Troy and Clesson improved her record to 5-6 after pitching a complete game, scattering eight hits, one run, four walks and striking out one.
Despite taking the loss, Rayner tossed a five hitter, striking out one, walking one and allowing no earned runs in a complete game.
"We played great softball today," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "Troy is a very good team and it was an intense game. Kandis threw very well. Christina pitched a gem against Fresno and we had opportunities to score but we just couldn't the big hit. I was proud of our effort."
Idaho State had eight hits in the two games with
Jessica Baca and freshman
Katee Wiley each coming up with two.

The Bengals had six hits, led by Wiley's 2-for-3 day with one RBI and one run.
Idaho State scored first in the first inning thanks to a lead-off walk by
Desirae Hoffman. Hoffman would later score after Troy pitcher Ashlyn Williams committed three consecutive illegal pitches.
Troy tied the game at one after the third inning but ISU countered with a run in the fifth and sixth innings to take the 3-1 lead. The Bengals took advantage of a Troy error in the fifth inning. With one out and Wiley on third and
Erin Olander on second, Hoffman grounded out but a throwing error by Troy allowed Wiley to score and give ISU the 2-1 lead.
Wiley then had her RBI in the next inning as Idaho State took advantage of another miscue to take the 3-1 lead.
Troy's attempt to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh fell short as it left two runners on base.
Fresno State 1 Idaho State 0
The Bulldogs scored their only run in the sixth inning, taking advantage of an Idaho State error to drop ISU to 5-10 after the first day of the Fresno State Bayer Crop Science Classic. Idaho State managed only two hits, coming from Olander and Baca.
Fresno State pitcher Michelle Moses struck out 14 Bengal batters while Rayner did not allow an extra base hit in her five-hit performance.
Idaho State continues play at Fresno State with a game against Drake at 3 p.m. and Fresno State at 8 p.m.
