POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team lost a hard fought 5-4 nine inning game to Bradley on the final day of the Fresno State Bayer Crop Science Classic. The nine-inning contest was the longest played game for Idaho State against a Division I opponent.
The Bengals did have a 10 inning and two nine inning games against the College of Idaho in 2008 and 2009.
Amanda Fitzsimmons pitched the final 5.2 innings and allowed only two hits and no unearned runs.
"Amanda came in and gave us great innings in the circle," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "But you cannot expect to win when you make base running mistakes in extra innings. We will continue to work on the little things and we will get better."
Katee Wiley was 1-for-3 with two RBIs while
Desirae Hoffman,
Jessica Baca,
Christina Rayner,
Erin Olander and Fitzsimmons each had a hit.
Idaho State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning. ISU got a run in the first thanks to a leadoff walk by Hoffman. She later scored on an RBI single to right field by Baca.
In the second, Fitzsimmons led off with a double to left-center and Rayner followed with a double to left field, platting Fitzsimmons. Rayner would score with two outs thanks to an infield single by
Katee Wiley.
Bradley took the lead in the bottom of the second with four runs. But it was Wiley who helped Idaho State tie the game at four in the top of the sixth inning with her sacrifice RBI that scored
Erin Olander.
Bradley took advantage of an Idaho State miscue in the ninth inning to score the winning run.
Idaho State returns to the field, March 18 for a tournament at Nevada. ISU opens up against Northern Illinois and Saint Mary's.
