POCATELLO, Idaho – Juniors
Katharina Marsela and
Laura Porras pushed the Hornets to a tiebreaker at the No. 2 doubles spot. The Bengals fell 6-1 to No. 50 Sacramento State with sophomore
Rachel Ryan earning ISU's lone victory when her opponent Katharina Knoebl defaulted the match at the No. 6 spot.
“Sacramento State is a very good team. They made some adjustments coming in here because of the altitude and by the time our team was comfortable in the match the hole was too deep,” said Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz.
Marsela and Porras jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Sophie Lohscheidt and Milica Zivanovic at the No. 2 spot. The Bengals worked their way up to a 4-3 lead with penetrating shots down the alley and sharp, well-executed poaches.
However, the Hornets wouldn't be intimidated climbing back to a 7-4 lead. The Bengals continued their game plan and pushed the match to a 7-7 tie. Since the doubles point had been decided, with the Bengals falling at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, a tiebreaker was played.
Idaho State held a 5-2 lead with Marsela holding both her services, but the Hornets collected on the next five points taking the match 8-7 (7-5).
In singles, Marsela fell 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position to Tatsiana Kapshai who is ranked No. 122 in the nation. Porras was overcome 6-1, 6-2 by Clarisse Baca at the No. 3 spot.
Risa Fujiwara was the last Bengal off the court in the first four matches played. She put in a strong fight but was overcome 6-2, 6-1 by Lohscheidt at the No. 4 position. Junior
Rilee Moorhead fell 6-1, 6-1 to Maria Meliuk at the No. 2 spot.
Sacramento State's Zivanovic overcame Vasquez 6-0 in the first set. The Bengal played high deep balls to take a 2-1 lead in the match, but the Hornet was too much as Vasquez fell 6-3 in the second set.
Sacramento State clinched a spot in the Big Sky tournament improving to 7-0 in league matches and 15-8 overall. The Bengals fell to 3-9 for the season and 0-5 in conference play.
