POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team took a 2-0 lead against Weber State before falling short in singles dropping four of the six singles contests to give the ISU a 4-3 conference loss in the Bengals' final home match of the season at Reed Gym Wednesday afternoon. Porras was the only Bengal to sweep both her doubles and singles matches.
“I'm not upset, but I was a little disappointed,” said Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz of the match. “We had our opportunities.”
Idaho State jumped ahead early capturing victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots for the doubles point. Juniors
Rilee Moorhead and
Risa Fujiwara easily rolled over opponents Michelle Warwick and Annika Karlsen 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. Fujiwara is graduating in the spring and celebrated her final home match on senior day with the doubles win.
Juniors
Katharina Marsela and
Laura Porras were victorious in their first match at the No.1 doubles spot of the season defeating Naseem Eslami and Brittiny Moore 8-6. The Bengals fought back from being down a break 1-3 to open the match, but won the next four games to take a 5-3 lead. ISU held service but then dropped the next two games before Marsela closed out the match on serve.
Porras gave ISU a 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Karlsen at the No. 3 spot improving her singles season record to 8-5.
“My game plan was to pass the ball to her backhand and go to the net and wait until she failed. I put a lot of balls back in the court and made her play,” said Porras of her strategy in singles.
The Bengal fell at the No. 4, 2 and 1 spots giving Weber State a 3-2 edge. Fujiwara was overcome 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Moorhead was down 0-4 in her first set against Moore before winning the next three games breaking Moore twice to be down a break at 3-4. She fought her way into a tiebreaker where the Bengal fell 7-4. With the momentum in her corner Moore went on to take the second set 6-2.
Marsela captured her first set 6-4 over Eslami at the No. 1 spot, but ran out of gas falling 6-1, 6-2 in the following sets. Weber State's Kristi Russell won the match for Weber State by defeating sophomore
Rachel Ryan 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.
Freshman
Zamira Vasquez closed out the dual match win a simple 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nittaya Phonharath at the No. 6 spot. The victory was Vasquez' fifth of the season.
Weber State improved to 4-10 overall and 3-3 in league play while Idaho State fell to 3-10 for the season and 0-6 in Big Sky action.
