Bengals Prep for Conference-Leading Vikings, Eagles

The No. 2 Bengals face the No. 1 Vikings Friday at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym

Idaho State faces the conference leading Portland State Vikings Friday, Oct. 12 at Reed Gym at 7 p.m.

BENGAL OVERVIEW

Idaho State volleyball (13-4, 7-1 BSC) preps for its biggest match-up yet as the second-place Bengals face the undefeated Portland State Vikings (12-7, 8-0 BSC) Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. ISU follows up with the EWU Eagles, a team that has not won a contest yet, Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. Fans can follow the action via live stats, audio and video all available at www.isubengals.com.

ABOUT IDAHO STATE
The Bengals are 13-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play on the season after defeating Weber State and Sacramento State last week. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tressa Lyman leads the Bengals in kills, averaging 3.38 per set. Junior setter Lori Mendenhall leads the assist effort with 746 assists and leads the conference, averaging 11.13 assists per set. Redshirt senior Jaclyn Hone-Hawkins leads ISU in blocks with 67 this season while redshirt sophomore Kylee Searle leads in digs with 3.64 per set. Senior Breanne Van Every leads ISU in service aces with 22.

As a team, the Bengals are leading the conference in assists (12.97) and kills (13.81). ISU is second in hitting percentage (.248) and service aces (1.42).

Nationally, the Bengals are ranked 40th in hitting percentage and 44th in assists per set. The Bengals are 38th in win-loss percentage. Individually, Lori Mendenhall is 32nd in the nation in assists per set.

LAST WEEK IN BENGAL VOLLEYBALL
Last week, Idaho State defeated Weber State at home 3-0. Redshirt freshman Tressa Lyman led ISU with 10 kills while junior setter Lori Mendenhall had a team-high 32 assists and senior outside hitter Breanne Van Every recorded 12 digs. The Bengals then took on Sacramento State on the road, winning the contest 3-2. Four Bengals recorded double-doubles in the contest: redshirt senior Jaclyn Hone-Hawkins (13k, 10d), redshirt freshman Tressa Lyman (16k, 11d), senior Breanne Van Every (16k, 19d) and junior Lori Mendenhall (55a, 10d).

HONE-HAWKINS CLOSING IN ON 1,000-POINT CLUBS
Last week, redshirt senior Jaclyn Hone-Hawkins scored her 1,000th point with a career total to 1,001.0. Hone-Hawkins also has 929 total digs, 71 away from 1,000. She also has 841 total kills. To become a member of the triple crown club, a player needs 1,000 points, 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills.

BENGAL STANDOUT: LORI MENDENHALL
So far this season, junior setter Lori Mendenhall has been named Big Sky Player of the Week twice (9/17 and 9/10). After leading ISU to a Kesier Classic title, she was also named tournament MVP. Against NAU (9/14), Mendenhall recorded a career-high 62 assists on her way to a double-double with 12 digs. So far this season she has recorded 746 total assists as well as 57 kills, 13 service aces, 160 digs and 33 blocks.

VAN EVERY NAMED SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
Senior outside hitter Breanne Van Every has been selected as a candidate for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award. Van Every is one of 30 candidates selected from Division I teams nationwide. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Van Every currently has 212 kills this season, averaging 3.16 per set. She also has a team-high 22 service aces as well as 18 assists, 166 digs and 30 blocks.

Van Every has been named to two all-tournament teams this season, the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational and Nike Portland Invitational. In 2011, Van Every was named to the all-tournament teams for the Utah State Tournament and UniWyo Cowgirl Classic.
 
PROMOTIONS
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, fans wearing pink will receive a $2 ticket to Friday's contest against Portland State. On Saturday, fans can get in free for the match-up against Eastern Washington with their football ticket stub from the Bengals' contest against UC Davis.

ABOUT PORTLAND STATE
Portland State is leading the conference with an unbeaten 8-0 record. The Vikings are 12-7 overall and are 4-3 on the road this season. PSU has won eight straight with its last loss coming Sept. 12, against then ranked No. 9 Oregon (3-0). Jaklyn Wheeler leads PSU and the conference in kills, averaging 4.23 kills per set. Kasimira Clark is Portland State's top digger and is No. 1 in the conference, averaging 5.29 per set. Clark also has a team-high 27 service aces this season. Garyn Schlatter leads the assist effort with 11.00 per set and Katie O'Brien leads the Vikings with 69 blocks on the season. Portland State is leading the conference in digs (17.56/set) and is second in kills (13.53/set).

SERIES INFO AND LAST MEETING WITH THE VIKINGS
Portland State leads the series 29-16 and the Vikings won the last contest 3-2, Oct. 22, 2011 in Pocatello. The Bengals won the two contests before that. ISU won 3-1 Oct. 22, 2010 in Pocatello and again Sept. 16, 2011 in Portland (3-1).

ABOUT EASTERN WASHINGTON
Eastern Washington has not won a single match so far this season and are 0-19 overall and 0-8 in Big Sky play. EWU's last win came on Nov. 3, 2011 in a 3-2 decision at Northern Arizona. Cora Kellerwan leads the Eagles in kills (2.39) and digs (2.97). Laney Brown leads the assist effort, averaging 8.43 per set. Taiia Fermantez is EWU's top blocker with 59 total this season.

SERIES INFO AND LAST MEETING WITH THE EAGLES
Eastern Washington leads the series 39-29 and the Bengals have lost seven straight to the Eagles. EWU won the last contest 3-0 on Oct. 21, 2011 in Pocatello. Idaho State last defeated EWU 3-0 at home on Sept. 20, 2008. The Bengals last defeated the Eagles in Cheney, Wash., on Sept. 23, 1995 in a 3-2 decision.
