Bengals Host Montana Western in Home Opener

POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State plays its only regular season home game in the month of November and December on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at ICCU Court in Holt Arena against Montana Western. Idaho State leads the overall series 55-3. The last time the two schools met was a 108-85 Bengal victory on January 6, 2004. On December 15, 2001, ISU beat Montana Western 73-69. Thursday is the third meeting since the 2001-02 season. The last time Idaho State lost to Montana Western was a 47-40 defeat at Montana Western in the 1933-34 season.

Montana Western is led in scoring by Maazin Butler's 15.2 points a game and Jordan Overstreet's 12.2 points. The NAIA program is averaging 72.1 points a contest and shooting .400 percent from the field. Montana Western has four players scoring in double figures. Montana Western is 7-3 on the season.

The Week That Was...
Idaho State competed in the Utah Thanksgiving Tournament last week, losing, 57-46 to Utah, 60-45 to Wright State and 54-52 to Central Michigan. The Bengal defense held Utah to 37.7 percent shooting from the field and Central Michigan to 36 percent. Central Michigan hit a shot in the last second of regulation to knock off the Bengals. The Bengals averaged 47.7 points a game in the three games and shot 36.7 percent from the field. Melvin Morgan led the ISU scoring with an average of 12.7 points a game.

Getting Defensive
Since Bill Evans has taken over as head coach ISU has improved its defense and that is evident in the first five games of the season as Idaho State is holding opponents to 55.6 points a game. That mark ranks 24th in the country and first in the Big Sky Conference.  The Bengal defense ranks fourth in the Big Sky Conference in steals at 7.2 and fifth in field goal percentage defense at 42.4 percent from the field.

Idaho State vs. Non Division I Schools
The last time Idaho State lost to a non Division I team was an 86-83 overtime loss in Pocatello to BYU-Hawaii on Dec. 18, 1991. During the Joe O'Brien era, Idaho State played nine non Division 1 games nad won by an average score of 75-65. Of the nine games, five were won by single digits. During the Doug Oliver era, ISU played 15 non Division I games in eight years and the Bengals won by an average score of 88.2-62.6. All but three games were won by 10 points or more.

Morgan on the Offensive
Melvin  Morgan has been the team leader offensively in 2012-13 as he leads the team in scoring at 13.2 points a game.  He had a season-high 19 points in the season-opener at Utah State. He has attempted a team-best 63 shots and is averaging 4.2 rebounds a game.

Newcomers Take Charge
This year's newcomers are averaging 25.4 points a game with Chris Hansen leading the way at 9.8 points and Tomas Sanchez, 7.2 points. Sanchez is shooting a team-best .429 percent from the floor.
