POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State women's basketball team defeated Carroll College 70-38 on Friday night at Reed Gym in front of a crowd of 1,004 fans. The Bengals improved to 5-3 on the year as Big Sky Conference play begins next week at home against Portland State and Eastern Washington.
“There were a lot of things we wanted to improve on tonight,” Idaho State coach
Seton Sobolewski said. “When we played Utah Valley there were certain areas we didn't think we did a good job on like defending the on ball screen, rebounding and blocking out all five players. These were some of the things we emphasized in this game. We wanted to improve in those areas and we definitely did."
Senior guard
Kaela Oakes, led the team in scoring with 16 points, shooting 7-for-11 and two-for-two from the three point line in only 20 minutes of play.
“She did a nice job tonight,” Sobolewski said. “The things I really like about what she did tonight was the penetration and dumping it off. She recognized open people after the drive and was able to kick it to them for shots. She made some really good decisions.”
Abyee Maracigan chipped in 12 points and collected seven rebounds while
Ashleigh Vella had 11 points.
The Bengals never trailed in the game and led by as many as 38 points on the evening. ISU scored 28 points off 21 Carroll College turnovers and won the rebounding battle 37-19.
Jessa Jeppesen had a game-high eight rebounds.
ISU shot 48 percent for the game and held Carroll College to 35.1 percent shooting. The Bengals got 24 points from the bench led
Sheryl Bitter's and
Rebecca Schrimpsher nine points.
“They are developing,” Sobolewski said on his bench. “It was important to develop the bench and get a lot of minutes tonight. Jessa does such a nice job on the glass and is playing hard. Sheryl and Becca are playing great right now.”
Idaho State held Carroll College to two points for the first 11 minutes of the game and jumped out to an 18-2 lead with under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The lead was cut to 11 points at 19-8 with 7:36 left in the half before ISU built its lead to 35-12 at the break after an Oakes 3-pointer with four seconds left on the clock.
The Bengals' biggest lead of the game was 38 at 52-14 with 13:02 left in regulation.
Idaho State returns to the court on Thursday, Dec. 20 vs. Portland State. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym. Idaho Central Credit Union will be giving out free shirts to the first 1,500 fans that come to the game.
