Bengals Battle No. 12 Washington and New Mexico Tough

Idaho State had 18 hits in the two games.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team lost to No. 12 Washington, 10-2 in five innings and after a seventh inning rally that fell just short, lost 9-8 to New Mexico in the third day of the Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. The Bengals are now 1-4 going into Sunday morning's game against McNeese State.

In the two games, Idaho State pounded out 18 hits and 10 RBIs. Eight different players had multiple hit games led by Amanda Fitzsimmons three hits and five RBIs. Katee Wiley, Ashley Moeller, Courtney Hancock, Courtney Dial, Vicky Galasso, Becky Simonsen and Hailey Breakwell all had two hits on the day.

Amanda Fitzsimmons took the loss against Washington as she went 4.1 innings, allowed 11 hits and 10 runs while striking out two. Kelsi Ott took the loss against the Lobos as she pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs.

“I loved the effort from the team coming back in the seventh after being down six,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “Becky Simonsen was awesome today and Ashley Moeller made huge strides offensively. Amanda Fitzsimmons continues to play well. We need more from our pitching staff and I expect they will respond tomorrow.”

Idaho State fell behind 2-0 after two innings. In the top of the third Fitzsimmons hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at two. But the Huskies followed by scoring two in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 10-2 five inning victory on Saturday morning.

Idaho State had two hits while Fitzsimmons went the distance in the circle. Simonsen had the other for the Bengals in the game.

The Bengals trailed 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when they started a furious rally as the first six batters reached base.  Breakwell started the seventh off with a single up the middle and Galasso singled followed by a Hanock walk to load the bases. Gabby Lopez then singled to left to score the first run and Dial continued the inning with a bunt-single that scored the second run.

Katee Wiley then reached base on an RBI single to right field before the Bengals recorded their first out. Fitzsimmons and Breakwell recorded the other RBIs in the seventh inning.

Idaho State had the tying run at third and the winning run at second base but the game ended when ISU grounded into a fielder's choice that got Breakwell out at second.

The Bengals had 16 hits in the game. Fitzsimmons, Breakwell, Galasso, Hancock, Dial and Wiley all had two hits.

The Bengals conclude the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday morning with an 8:30 a.m. contest against McNeese State.
