POCATELLO, Idaho – Senior forward
Rachel Strawn scored her 10
th goal of the 2012 season with just two seconds on the game clock to push ISU to a 2-1 win over Southern Utah Friday afternoon. The win marked the first conference win for Idaho State, improving the Bengals to 1-1-1 in Big Sky action and 6-4-1 overall. The Thunderbirds fell to 1-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.
“I was very pleased with our play,” ISU Head Coach
Allison Gibson said. “Unfortunately, the goal that we gave up is the same goal we gave up against Montana as well as one of the goals against Eastern Washington and we really need to fix that. I think that we stuck to our game plan which we hadn't done last weekend. We really got back to playing our style of soccer and for that reason, I am very proud of them.”
Strawn scored two goals in the competition. She scored her first in the 11
th minute of the game to put ISU up 1-0. Freshman
Lauren Bermudez was credited with the assist.
The Bengals maintained the 1-0 lead for a majority of the contest until SUU's Sydney Cook scored her first goal of the season in the 78
th minute to tie the game up 1-1.
However, just when it looked like the two squads would be heading into overtime,
Madeline Gochnour hit a streaking Strawn from across the field. Strawn put the ball in with just two seconds on the clock, securing the win for Idaho State.
With her two goals in the game, Strawn now has 10 goals on the season and is one goal away from tying the ISU single-season goal record.
“I have so much respect for Rachel,” Gibson said. “She has really taken on a whole new leadership role and individual role for herself. She decided this was going to be the year and it is not just coming to her, she was worked hard for this. This is all happening as a result of all the hard work she has put in and I couldn't be happier for her.”
Overall, ISU dominated the game offensively, recording 17 shots with eight on goal while Southern Utah posted just seven shots with three on goal.
Goalkeeper
Sheridan Hapsic posted two saves with one goal allowed in 90 minutes of play against the Thunderbirds.
The Bengals return to the field Sunday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. against Big Sky foe Northern Arizona.
