POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's tennis team defeated Utah State 4-3 Thursday and opened the 2013 season with a win, marking the second straight season that ISU has open with a victory. The win also marks Idaho State's third straight victory over the Aggies as the Bengals swept USU last season. It is the first time in program history that ISU has won three straight over Utah State.
The Bengals opened the match on a high note, defeating the Aggies in doubles action. Senior
Nate Gross and
Charles Norman defeated Sven Poslusny and Marcus Fritz 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles. Freshmen
Christian Marian and
Jamey Swiggart nabbed their first collegiate doubles win with an 8-4 victory over Matt Sweet and Sean Levesque at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The match came down to the wire as both teams played hard against one another. Gross defeated Sweet 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot while Marian and Swiggart earned their first singles wins to carry the Bengals past the Aggies. Marian won the No. 2 doubles against Fritz 6-4, 6-3 while Swiggart took the No. 5 singles against Levesque 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
Idaho State hits the road for two straight contests following the win against Utah State. ISU faces Utah in Salt Lake City Saturday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. and Weber State in Ogden Sunday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. The ISU women open their season tomorrow at Utah State at 1 p.m.
