SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Idaho State women's basketball won its third straight conference contest with a 62-52 win over Sacramento State Thursday night, handing the Hornets their first home loss of the season. ISU improves to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in conference action while the Hornets fall to 8-7 and 3-3.
Junior guard
Lindsey Reed bounced back after going scoreless against Weber State earlier this week to lead ISU with 19 points against Sacramento State. Reed went 5-10 from the field, 3-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-6 from the line. She added two rebounds and two assists to her bottom line in 34 minutes of play.
Senior guard
Kaela Oakes and junior forward
Cydney Horton also posted double-figure scoring performances against the Hornets. Oakes recorded 14 points with two rebounds and one steal while Horton was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Horton also recorded two blocks in the contest and is just three away from 100 career blocks.
“I think everyone took their moments to step up,” ISU Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. “
Kaela Oakes hit some tough shots early on and then
Lindsey Reed was the “Steady Eddy” tonight. She shot the ball really well. She really showed up to play tonight and that was really nice to see because she had struggled the last couple games and had been in a little bit of a funk so to come back like this is very impressive. Vella did a great job at the end of the game. Initially she wasn't really in the right mind frame to score tonight because she was so focused on breaking the press, but we made some adjustments and I challenged her. After that, she put herself in a position to score and made some big buckets for us down the stretch.”
ISU's defense held Sacramento State to 33.9 percent shooting from the field. The Hornets hit just three 3-point shots for a 27.3 shot percentage from beyond the arc. SAC averaged a conference-leading 71.3 points per game going into the contest and were held to just 52 points against Idaho State. The Hornets were also second in the conference in rebounding offense going into tonight's game and the Bengals beat SAC on the boards 43-33.
“I think the best thing about tonight was the intensity level that we played at,” Sobolewski said. “We were sliding our feet, moving and did what we had to do to win this game.”
Overall, Idaho State shot 36 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. ISU continued to shoot well from the free throw line, sinking 21-of-27 against the Hornets.
Sacramento State's Fantasia Hilliard led Sacramento State going into the game, averaging 12.1 points per game, but a strong defensive effort from the Bengals held Hilliard to just nine points. Alle Moreno, who scored 25 points in Sacramento State's 73-65 win at the Hornet's Nest last season, was held to just five points tonight. Kylie Kuhns lead the Hornets with 15 points.
Idaho State has one more game remaining in this three-game week and will face Northern Arizona Saturday, Jan. 19 at 6:35 p.m. The contest will air on 91.1 KISU with audio and video also available via web streaming. The contest will also air via tape delay on Fox Sports Arizona and Fox College Sports at 11 p.m. Saturday night.
