POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State Bengals fell to Portland State 1-0 on a goal by Tamia Hasan in the 86th minute of the final home match of the 2013 season for the Bengals.
The Bengals were shutout for the first time in 12 matches and the Vikings scored their eighth shutout of 2013 as they clinched the Big Sky Conference regular-season title.
The defensive battle was highlighted by
Sheridan Hapsic who faced 14 shots and made three saves.
The Idaho State offense was only able to muster up one shot in the first half. The second half was better with seven shots but only three shots were on goal and none really challenged PSU keeper Caitlin Pease.
After today's action the Bengals have a 6-7-2 record overall and a 3-2-2 record in the conference. ISU sits in fourth place in the Big Sky standings behind PSU (7-0-1 BSC), Weber State (4-2-1 BSC) and Northern Arizona (4-2-0 BSC).
The Bengals have just two matches remaining in conference play. Next week ISU plays at North Dakota Thursday and at Northern Colorado Sunday.
The Bengals still control their own destiny. If they win both of their remaining games they are in the Big Sky championship which will be held in Portland on Nov. 7-10. Southern Utah and Northern Colorado are the only teams that can surpass the Bengals but ISU holds the tiebreaker over SUU and still has a head-to-head match against Northern Colorado in the season finale.
