Bengals Face Flames in First of Nine Straight Road Games

Notes l Live Video l Live Audio l Live Stats

POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho State will play Illinois-Chicago in the first of nine consecutive road games. It is the first ever meeting for the Bengals and Flames and will take place at the UIC Pavilion in downtown Chicago.

LAST GAME: CARROLL COLLEGE
Jessica Tingey scored her second consecutive double-double and two other Bengals scored in double figures to lead Idaho State to a 61-48 win over Carroll College (Mont.) in the last home game of 2013.

Lindsey Reed scored on a jumper on Idaho State's first possession to give the Bengals a 2-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game and the Bengals never trailed after that point.

ISU started off strong and took a 16-point, 27-11 lead with 4:12 left in the first half. Carroll wouldn't back down and cut the Bengal lead to 34-27 at the break.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half before Idaho State began to pull away in the final minutes for the 13-point victory.

Becca Schimpsher scored a career high 13 points, all of which came in the second half.

THE "ROAD" TO BIG SKY PLAY
The Bengals begin a tough nine-game schedule at UIC and will not play at Reed Gym until Jan. 9th against North Dakota. Road games include UIC, Oklahoma State, Utah State, Boise State, Drake and Iowa.

The game at UIC will be the first game East of the Mississippi for Idaho State under coach Seton Sobolewski.

A DECADE OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Idaho State has advanced to a school record 10 straight Big Sky Conference Tournaments. In that time the Bengals have advanced to two NCAA tournaments (07 and 12) and four WNITs (04, 06, 08 and 13).

TRIP TO THE WNIT
The Bengals played in their second-consecutive post season national tournament in 2013. The Bengals played Brigham Young in Provo in the opening round of the WNIT. The Bengals fell 69-54 to the Cougars. Ashleigh Vella scored a team high 15 points and Jessa Jeppesen grabbed eight rebounds in the loss to BYU.

TWO STARTERS RETURN FOR THE BENGALS
Kara Jenkins and Lindsey Reed return for the Bengals. Jenkins comes into the season with 580 career points and 479 career rebounds. She has played in 93 games and has 53 starts for Idaho State.

Reed has 970 career points and 492 career rebounds. She has 92 games under her belt including 89 starts in her career at ISU.

OTHER RETURNERS FOR THE BENGALS
The Bengals lack experience, along with the two starters the Bengals have three other seniors, one junior and one sophomore to round out the list of returning players.

Senior Jessica Tingey, formerly Jessica Jensen, has 64 career points and 65 career rebounds. Senior Alissa Willard, a JC transfer, played in 15 games in 2012-13 and scored four points. Senior Sheryl Bitter has the most experience of the last season's non-starters; she had played in 77 games and scored 109 points in her career at Idaho State.

Junior Becca Schimpsher has played in 35 career games and has 46 points. Sophomore Anna Lee Policicchio played in only six games last season but spent time over the summer with the Canadian U19 National team.

POINT GUARDS
With the graduation of Kaela Oakes there is no clear leader at the point guard position. Senior guard Lindsey Reed may start at the one but junior college transfer Jasmine Lemon may also see time at the position.

Guard
Kara Jenkins is the team captain and has the most experience on the team. Outside of Jenkins and Reed the Bengal youth once again is obvious. Sheryl Bitter is the only other Guard with a start under her belt and it is just one.

FORWARDS
Senior Jessica Tingey is the most experienced forward on the Bengal squad, she has played in 53 games in her career.  She has scored 64 career points and 65 career rebounds.

No other Bengal has played in more than 15 career games or has more than four points. Anna Lee Policicchio only played in six games in her freshman year but she spent the summer training with the Canadian Junior Olympic team before an injury kept her from playing.

ISU NEWCOMERS
The Bengals have eight newcomers, one JC transfer in junior guard Jasmine Lemon and seven freshman; Grace Kenyon, Sherise Porchia, Katrina Bacovcin, April Dawson, Lindsay Brown, Natalie Mecham and Kyndall Adams.

BENGALS RANKED FIFTH IN BOTH PRESEASON POLLS
The Idaho State Women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conference by both the coaches and the media the Conference released Wednesday.

The first five spots were the same in both polls. Eastern Washington is the favorite followed by Montana, Northern Colorado, Montana State then Idaho State.

In the coaches poll the Bengals were picked just above Southern Utah followed by Portland State, North Dakota, Sacramento State, Northern Arizona and Weber State. In the Media Poll Sacramento State was picked in the sixth spot followed by Portland State Southern Utah, North Dakota, Northern Arizona and Weber State. ISU received four first place votes in the media poll out of 30 ballots casted.

ISU PREPS FOR ANOTHER CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The 2013-14 non-conference line-up looks to be one of the more challenging seasons for Sobolewski and the Bengals with competitors like Illinois-Chicago, Oklahoma State, Drake and Iowa as well as just two official home games in the preseason and nearly two months without a game in Pocatello.

ABOUT ILLINOIS-CHICAGO
The Flames are 0-2 this season in games against St. Xavier (80-79) and Northwestern (79-63).  Sophomore transfer Ruanna Campbell leads UIC in points (35) and rebounds (17). Emily Kobel  and Melita Emanuel-Carr are also averaging double-figures in points.

UIC is shooting .374 from the field and has had 37 turnovers in two games.

The Flames were picked to finish fourth in the preseason Horizon League poll and Seniors Katie Hannemann and Rachel Story were voted Preseason First Team All-Horizon League.

Veteran coach Regina Miller leads the Flames. She is in her third year at UIC but it is her 18th year overall. Miller currently holds a 262-259 career record as a head coach with prior stints at UNLV and Western Illinois. Miller compiled a stellar 175-125 mark in 10 seasons as the head coach at the UNLV. Miller led the Lady Rebels to the postseason in six-consecutive years (2001-06), the longest such stretch in program history.
