ISU Men's Tennis Defeat Portland State

The Bengals won the doubles point.

Bengals gain their first Big Sky victory.

POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State men's tennis opened Big Sky Conference play on Saturday by defeating Portland State, 6-1, at home. The Bengal men now advance to 2-2 on the season.

“We played well today," Idaho State coach Bobby Goeltz said. "We played well enough to win the doubles point but doubles is something we need to work on.”

The Bengals won the doubles point and victories came from the freshmen team of Christian Marian and Jamey Swiggart and sophomore team of Krzysztof Stempien and Andres Coello.

"The freshmen won doubles and singles today," Goeltz said. "Krzysztof won doubles and had a really good win in the No. 3 position.”

Marian and Swiggart defeated Connor Gilmore and Ian Risenhoover in the No. 2 position, 8-3. While, Stempien and Coello defeated Stratton Gilmore and Lukas Kortus in the No. 3 spot, 8-3.

In singles action, Christian Marian continued to play in the No. 1 position for the Bengals, defeating Portland States Antoine Bechmann, 6-2, 6-2.

Seniors Nate Gross and Charles Norman came out with victories over their opponents.

“Charles had a really good win at No. 2," Goeltz said.

Norman overcame Stratton Gilmore in the No. 2 position, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Gross defeated Connor Gilmore in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Krzysztof Stempien played against Will Cochrane in the No. 3 position, where he won the match, 6-1, 6-3.

Freshman Jamey Swiggart continues to show great progress with the Bengals as he defeated Lukas Kortus, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 5 position, with his third singles victory of the season.

“For a freshman, Jamey is responding really well," Goeltz said. "The results of the match were in while he was still playing and you never know how that is going to affect a player.”

ISU men's tennis returns to Big Sky Conference action Friday, Feb. 22, where they take on Eastern Washington at home. ISU women's tennis returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, at home as they face Big Sky opponents Portland State.
