Horton Career High Sparks Bengals To Road Win at SUU

Cydney Horton scored 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting.

Idaho State defeated SUU 60-50 on Saturday night in Cedar City, Utah.

POCATELLO, Idaho- Cydney Horton scored a career-high 28 points, 21 coming in the second half, to lead the Idaho State women's basketball team to a 60-50 win over Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah. Idaho State is now 13-9 overall and 8-5 in Big Sky Conference play.

“Cydney had a great game,” Idaho State coach Seton Sobolewski said. “She was feeling super confident and just took over tonight. She made her free throws down the stretch, was tough inside and just did a great job for us.”

Horton scored her 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field and was 8-of-10 from the field in the second half. Lindsey Reed was the only other Bengal in double figures as she scored 12 points. Kaela Oakes had seven points and a team-high six rebounds. Oakes and Kara Jenkins had a team-best three assists.

The Bengals shot 35.2 percent from the field and held Southern Utah to 28.3 percent shooting. Idaho State's defense forced 16 T-Bird turnovers and only turned the ball over 11 times themselves.

Southern Utah was 14-for-18 at the free throw line and ISU was 17-for-26 and ISU had 11 assists and four steals in the game.

The first half of the game was back and forth early. Idaho State led 14-8 with 12:55 left in the first period after an Oakes layup. Southern Utah then went on a 12-2 run to take a 20-16 lead four minutes later. The Bengals countered with a 15-2 run that was capped by a three-point play by Horton to put ISU back on top 31-22 with two minutes to play until halftime. Idaho State led 32-29 at the break.

While the game was tied on several different occasions early in the second half, Southern Utah never led and the Bengals pulled away in the final 10 minutes of the game. With the score tied at 39 with 12:36 to play in the game, ISU went on an 18-6 run to extend its lead to 57-45 with 4:04 to play thanks to a jumper by Ashleigh Vella. Southern Utah got no closer than eight points the rest of the way. The Bengal defense held SUU to six-of-26 shooting from the field in the second half.

“We just slid our feet better and helped at the right time,” Sobolewski said. “They also missed some shots that they normally make.”

Idaho State returns to the road for a 7 p.m. contest at Montana State on Feb. 14.
