POCATELLO, Idaho- ISU women's tennis earned its first win of the 2013 season Saturday after defeating conference rival Weber State Saturday, 4-3. The Bengals improve to 1-2 in conference play and the Wildcats fall to 1-2. The win is the first conference win for the Bengals over Weber State in program history.
“I think the women watched the men battle for their win and followed suit,” ISU Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. “They fought hard and gained momentum from one another. They didn't give up and I am very proud of their effort today.”
The Bengal win came from four singles victories.
Kasey Bacon played a hard match against Ashley Tanner in the No. 2 spot. Bacon overcame Tanner in the tiebreaker match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman
Madelyn Weltzin gained her first win as a Bengal with her triumph over Thais Kurer in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-2.
Laura Theus defeated Michelle Warwick in the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-4.
Tied 3-3, the match rested on the shoulders of junior
Zamira Vasquez in the No. 6 position. Vasquez overpowered Annika Karlsen of WSU, 6-4, 6-2 to secure the victory for the Bengals.
The Bengals were unable to clinch the doubles point.
Marian Tangarife fell to Kristi Elmer in the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-1.
Svenja Tegtmeier played hard against Nittaya Phonharath in the No. 3 spot. Tegtmeier was defeated by Phonharath in the tie break match, 7-9, 6-4, 6-2.
The women's will return to action when they take on Sacramento State on March 15 at home. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
