Bengals Begin Big Sky Play at SUU

Idaho State plays at SUU this weekend.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team plays its first-ever Big Sky Conference softball games this weekend on March 29-30 at Southern Utah. Games begin both days at 12 p.m. with the March 29 contest being a double header.

Idaho State leads the overall series against SUU, 12-7.  The most recent meeting was a 3-2 loss in 2009.

ISU Among Top in Big Sky Conference Stats
The Bengals are first as a team in the conference in nine different statistical categories. ISU ranks first in batting average (.311), slugging percentage (.510), on base percentage (.368), runs scored (134), hits (227), home runs (35), total bases (372), RBI (124) and stolen bases (34). The Bengals are also second in doubles at 34.

Individual Bengals Among Big Sky Stat Leaders
Vicky Galasso ranks first in eight different conference statistical categories. She is first in batting average (.461), slugging percentage (.843), on base percentage (.484), runs scored (23), hits (41), RBI (24), home runs (9) and total bases (75). She also ranks fourth in doubles with seven. Amanda Fitzsimmons ranks first in runs scored (23), second in slugging percentage (.782), RBI (21), home runs (8) and total bases (56). She is third in batting average (.352), on base percentage (.465) and innings pitched (94.2). Fitzsimmons ranks fourth in strikeouts (59), wins (5) and doubles (7). Katelyn Marquez ranks first in stolen bases (14), second in hits (31), third in runs scored (19) and fourth in batting average (.344). Katee Wiley is fifth in batting average at .342 and Terah Blackwell is third in RBI at 20 and fourth in home runs with six. Maddy Hickman is third in slugging percentage (.560) and second in put outs (158). Becky Molyneaux is second in stolen bases with 11.

Bengals in NCAA Stats
As a team ISU ranks 38th in the country in batting average at .311, 86th in scoring at 4.96 runs a game, 10th in home runs per game at 1.3 and 19th in slugging percentage at .510.  Individually, Vicky Galasso ranks 16th in batting average at .461, 31st in home runs per game at .33, 26th in slugging percentage at .843 and 33rd in home runs at nine a game. Amanda Fitzsimmons is 43rd in home runs per game at .32, 53rd in slugging percentage at .789 and 53rd in home runs at eight a game.

Offensive Power
Through the first 27 games, ISU has tied the single-season home run record with 35. The 2011 team also hit 35 home runs in the season. ISU is currently hitting .311 as a team and no Bengal team has hit over .300 for a season since the program was brought back in 2007. The 1977 team hit .351. The best batting average was .286 in the 2009 season and .284 in 2010.

Bengals Nearing Single Season Records
Vicky Galasso has nine home runs this year and the single-season record is 12 by Heather Dixon in 2007. Vicky Galasso's .461 batting average would currently rank as the second-best single-season average. Nancy Long hit .625 in 1977 by going 25-40. Galasso's 24 RBI ties for 10th on the single-season RBI Top 10 list.
