POCATELLO, Idaho- The scheduled double header between the top two teams in the Big Sky Conference will be resumed Saturday at 12 p.m.  Portland State beat Idaho State, 7-5, in eight innings in game 1 but game 2 was suspended due to darkness after eight innings with the score tied at 12.

The loss halted the Bengals seven game win streak as ISU is now 20-19 and 7-3 in the Big Sky Conference Play. Portland State is 9-1 league play.

In game 1, Idaho State led 5-2 after four innings but the Vikings scored three runs in the fifth and two in the eighth to earn the win.

The Bengals trailed 12-7 going into the bottom of the sixth of game 2, before scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning to send the game into extra innings. The five run inning was sparked by a bases-clearing triple by Amanda Fitzsimmons and RBI singles from Hailey Breakwell and Courtney Dial.

The Bengals had 25 hits on the day with 15 coming in the game that will be continued Sunday at 12 p.m.

“I am proud of the offense,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “The offense battled and battled. When you are down five runs and throw it back up there that is pretty awesome. “

In game 1, Idaho State scored its five runs on 10 hits but committed three errors in the field. Portland State tallied its seven runs on nine hits and three errors.

In game 1, Katelyn Marquez, Terah Blackwell and Katee Wiley combined for seven of the team's 10 hits. Wiley was 3-4, Blackwell 2-3 with an RBI and Marquez 2-4 with an RBI.

The Bengals scored their five runs in the third and fourth innings while PSU had one run in the first and fourth innings and three in the fifth.
“In game 1 they just flat out played better than us,” Wright said.

Fitzsimmons took the loss in game 1. In game 2, Bailey Foster helped the Bengals defensively by pitching 3.2 innings, striking out five, allowing three hits and two runs.

It was Foster who held the Viking scoreless for the final two innings before the contest was suspended.

“I am very pleased with Bailey Foster and the job she did when we needed it the most,” Wright said. “In a game when our pitchers were struggling, for the offense to fight and Bailey come in and shut it down was tremendous.”
