POCATELLO, Idaho - Jessica Sanchez and Amanda Ellsworth each scored first half goals and Sheridan Hapsic scored her first shutout of 2013 to lead Idaho State to a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon over the University of Idaho and a weekend sweep of the Division I programs in Idaho.
The win moves the Bengals to a 2-0 record and drops Idaho to 0-2.
The match was won in the 39th minute of the first half when Ellsworth dropped a pass over the head of a defender to Sanchez waiting deep in the box. The Vandal goalkeeper left the goal to challenge Sanchez but the freshman sent a dribbling shot into the left corner of the goal to give ISU the 1-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later Lia Margolis centered a pass right in front of the goal where Ellsworth was waiting. She sent a header over the goalkeeper's hands for the second goal of the match.
On the other end of the field Hapsic delivered a gem. She only recorded two saves during the match but her leadership helped keep the ISU back line in good position and limited her shots on goal.
Also on defense, Allyson Stainbrook shined for the second straight match. This game she had a little more to show for her effort as she recorded four shots, all on goal.
In total the Bengals outshot the Vandals 14-7 with an 8-2 advantage with shots on goal. The win was the second consecutive win against the Vandals.
In previous seasons the Bengals would have clinched the Governor's Cup but the competition was discontinued last season with conference realignment.
The Bengals now prepare for their first road action of the season. ISU will play Texas Tech Friday at 6 p.m. mtn. in Lubbock, Texas.
The Red Raiders are 2-0 on the season and are coming off of a dominating 6-0 home win over Colorado State.
