POCATELLO, Idaho – Stephanie Lee scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half to help Northern Colorado pull away late and beat Idaho State 62-55 Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym.
The Bears started the game with a 9-0 run to put the Bengals in a big deficit for the third straight game. The lead held for much of the first half but trailing 19-10 with 6:43 left, the Bengals found their grove. ISU outscored NC 16-2 to close out the half and took a 26-21 lead into the break.
The Bears started the second half with an 11-4 run, culminating in a Lee layup with 14:23 to play to take a 32-30 lead.
After trading leads for much of the second half,
Lindsey Reed tied the game at 45 with two free throws at the 4:57 mark.
From that point on the Bears offense caught fire and outscored the Bengals 17-10 to finish off the game.
"We made a lot of mental mistakes that gave Northern Colorado a lot of open looks on offense," Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. "We played hard and we played with heart but we need to play better on the mental side of the game."
Reed led Idaho State with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Jessica Tingey scored 13.
Idaho State was 4-23 from the three-point line but out rebounded a bigger NC squad 49-34.
Lee's 21 points led the Bears while Jamie Derrieaux scored a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Molly Fuehn also scored in double-figures with 12 points.
"We've got sixteen games left," Sobolewski said. "If we play well and do the things we need to do we could have a few more, if we play poorly then that is going to be it."
The first of those 16 remaining games will be Saturday, January 18, in Cedar City against Southern Utah. The T-birds dropped today's game at Sacramento State 97-79 and will play at Northern Arizona on Monday, January 13 and host Weber State, Thursday, January 16, before they meet the Bengals.
