LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho State Men's tennis team started its 2014 season with 5-2 loss at Utah State Monday.
The Bengals started with a heated doubles competition. At No. 1 USUs Marcus Fritz and Fredrik Peterson defeated Krzystof Stempien and
Josh Goodwin 6-4.
The No. 2 match went down to the wire but again the Aggie team prevailed. Matt Sweet and Andrew Whiting defeated Austin miller and
Jamey Swiggart 6-5(5).
At No. 3 ISU's
Daniel Loebel and
Bjorn Scheepbouwer were defeated 6-4 by Dennis Baumgertner and Curran Wearmouth.
The Aggies moved to a 3-0 lead early in the singles matches when Baumgartner defeated Stempien 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 and Sweet defeated Goodwin 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
Idaho State got back cut the lead to 3-2 when Miller defeated Fritz 6-3, 3-6,6-5(2) at No. 3 and Swiggart won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 2.
With two matches to play Tomas Cosmai defeated
Bjorn Scheepbouwer 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 to give the Aggies a 4-2 advantage and seal the victory.
Whiting defeated Loebel 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 to complete the match.
The win gives Utah State a 1-1 record on the season while it was the first match for ISU who moves to 0-1.
"I thought we played really well," Head Coach
Bobby Goeltz said. "Utah State is a good team and they have a match under their belt. I think the guys played better than I expected for the first match of the season."
Goeltz was especially pleased that Miller and Swiggart were able to win tough matches so early in the season.
"Those two guys really gutted out those wins," Goeltz said. "Jamey and Austin played well and I'm happy with the way they played for their first match of the season."
Idaho State will host Weber State in their first home match of 2014 at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reed Gym. The Match will not be considered a conference match.
