POCATELLO, Idaho – It came down to the last set but the Idaho State Bengal women's tennis team defeated Seattle U, 4-3, on Friday to claim its first win of the season.
The Bengals kicked off the match by winning the doubles point, 2-1. Seattle U's Corinne Wurden and Kristen James defeated ISU's
Kasey Bacon and
Madelyn Weltzin, 6-3, to start off the doubles point.
ISU's
Svenja Tegtmeier and
Wiebke Boeckmann defeated Barbara Ann Carey and Gabriella Weissmann 6-4 to even up the score at 1-1 in the doubles point.
At No. 1, the battle came down to a tiebreaker but
Laura Theus and
Marian Tangarife defeated Kelli Woodman and Sarah Lucas 7-6(7-4).
Seattle won two quick points to start the singles competition. At No. 4, Lucas defeated Weltzin 6-2, 6-0 to even the score up at 1-1. At No. 3, Carey defeated Tegtmeier 6-2,6-3 to gain a 2-1 lead.
At No. 2,
Kasey Bacon defeated Anna Lambert 6-4, 6-1 to tie the match up at two.
The No. 1 match ended in a victory for Seattle but it was a battle to the end. Woodman defeated Tangarife 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in the super breaker. The
Redhawks held a 3-2 lead with just two matches to play.
At No. 5, Weissmann took the first set, 6-3, but Thesu fought back to win the second set 6-4 and force a super breaker third set. Theus won the break, 11-9, to knot the score up at 3-3 with just the No. 6 match to finish.
Boeckmann defeated Wurden 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 to give the Bengals a 4-3 win.
The win moves Idaho State to 1-1 on the season while Seattle U drops to 0-3.
The Bengals next face Utah State on Thursday, February 6, at 12 p.m. in Reed Gym.
