Bengal Women Kick Off Second Half of Big Sky Play at Northern Colorado

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State Bengals kick off the second half of Big Sky play with the longest conference road trip on the slate. The Bengals travel to play Northern Colorado Thursday at 7 p.m. and North Dakota Saturday at 1 p.m. mtn.

The Bengals are one of the hottest teams in the Big Sky having won five of the last six games including a home sweep of Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. The Bengals are 8-11 overall and 6-4 in Big Sky play. Idaho State lost their first meetings with both teams.

Lindsey Reed leads ISU with 14.9 points per game. Jessica Tingey scores 11.7 PPG and leads the Bengals with 11.7 rebounds per game.

ABOUT NORTHERN COLORADO

The Bears are 11-9 overall and 5-6 in Big Sky play with one of those wins came on a 62-55 victory over Idaho State in Pocatello. Northern Colorado lost their last game to Eastern Washington 52-51 in Greeley.

Stephanie Lee is the second leading scorer in the Big Sky conference with 19.6 PPG and Jamie Derrieux scores 10.1 PPG. Kim Lockridge leads the Bears with 6.1 RPG.

Head Coach Jaime White is in her eighth year at the helm of a Northern Colorado women's basketball program. She has a career record of 114-122.

LAST MATCHUP: BENGALS FALL TO BEARS 62-55

Stephanie Lee scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half to help Northern Colorado pull away late and beat Idaho State 62-55 at Reed Gym.

The Bears started the game with a 9-0 run to put the Bengals in a big deficit for the third straight game. The lead held for much of the first half but trailing 19-10 with 6:43 left, the Bengals found their grove. ISU outscored NC 16-2 to close out the half and took a 26-21 lead into the break.

The Bears started the second half with an 11-4 run, culminating in a Lee layup with 14:23 to play to take a 32-30 lead.

After trading leads for much of the second half, Lindsey Reed tied the game at 45 with two free throws at the4:57 mark. From that point on the Bears offense caught fire and outscored the Bengals 17-10 to finish the game.

LAST GAME: NORTHERN ARIZONA

Five Bengals scored in double-figures en route to an 82-72 win over Northern Arizona Saturday afternoon.

The Bengal team started the game on an 8-0 run on a layup by Jessica Tingey and 3-pointers by Rebecca Schrimpsher and Lindsey Reed.

The Lumberjacks then went on a 12-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer by Erikka Banks at the half-way point in the first half to give NAU the 12-10 lead.

The remainder of the half was a back-and-fourth battle. NAU held a 27-25 lead with 53 seconds remaining before Alissa Willard scored five-straight points to close the half and give the Bengals a 30-27 lead at the break.

The Bengals never trailed in the second half on the way to the ten point lead.

SOBOLEWSKI BECOMES THE WINNINGEST COACH IN ISU HISTORY

The win over Northern Arizona was Head Coach Seton Sobolewski's 94th career victory. The win pushed Sobolewski past Jon Newlee as the winningest coach in ISU history.

Sobolewski has led Idaho State to the Big Sky tournament each year of his tenure including 2012 when the Bengals won the championship to advance to the NCAA tournament. He has a career .543 winning percentage with the latest of the wins coming Saturday afternoon against his alma mater, Northern Arizona.

REED NAMED BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Reed, a senior from Kingman, Ariz., averaged 18.5 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Idaho State to wins over Sacramento State and Northern Arizona.

Reed was the key ball handler against the Hornets' press and had just three turnovers for the game. The guard had a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with 14 points and four assists in the 62-53 win.

On Saturday, Reed had 23 points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal to help ISU defeat Northern Arizona 82-72.

This is the first time Reed has received a player of the week award.

REED HITS THE MILLENNIUM MARK

With 19 points against Illinois-Chicago Lindsey Reed surpassed 1000 career points. She is just the 17th player in ISU history to join the 1000 point club. She also hit the 500 career rebound mark against Black Hills State in the first game of the season. Reed is the leading scorer for the Bengals this season and averages 14.6 PPG.

A DECADE OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

Idaho State has advanced to a school record 10 straight Big Sky Conference Tournaments. In that time the Bengals have advanced to two NCAA tournaments (07 and 12) and four WNITs (04, 06, 08 and 13).

TRIP TO THE WNIT

The Bengals played in their second-consecutive post season national tournament in 2013. The Bengals played Brigham Young in Provo in the opening round of the WNIT. The Bengals fell 69-54 to the Cougars. Ashleigh Vella scored a team high 15 points and Jessa Jeppesen grabbed eight rebounds in the loss to BYU.

TWO STARTERS RETURN FOR THE BENGALS

Kara Jenkins and Lindsey Reed return for the Bengals. Jenkins comes into the season with 580 career points and 479 career rebounds. She has played in 93 games and has 53 starts for Idaho State.

Reed has 970 career points and 492 career rebounds. She has 92 games under her belt including 89 starts in her career at ISU.

OTHER RETURNERS FOR THE BENGALS

Along with the two starters the Bengals have three other seniors, one junior and one sophomore to round out the list of returning players.

Senior Jessica Tingey, formerly Jessica Jensen, has 64 career points and 65 career rebounds. Senior Alissa Willard, a JC transfer, played in 15 games in 2012-13 and scored four points. Senior Sheryl Bitter has the most experience of last season's non-starters; she had played in 77 games and scored 109 points in her career at Idaho State.

Junior Becca Schimpsher has played in 35 career games and has 46 points. Sophomore Anna Lee Policicchio played in only six games last season but spent time over the summer with the Canadian U19 National team.

ISU NEWCOMERS

The Bengals have eight newcomers, one JC transfer in junior guard Jasmine Lemon and seven freshmen; Grace Kenyon, Sherise Porchia, Katrina Bacovcin, April Dawson, Lindsay Brown, Natalie Mecham and Kyndall Adams.


BENGALS RANKED FIFTH IN BOTH PRESEASON POLLS
The Idaho State Women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conference by both the coaches and the media.

The first five spots were the same in both polls. Eastern Washington is the favorite followed by Montana, Northern Colorado, Montana State then Idaho State.

In the coaches poll the Bengals were picked just above Southern Utah followed by Portland State, North Dakota, Sacramento State, Northern Arizona and Weber State. In the Media Poll Sacramento State was picked in the sixth spot followed by Portland State Southern Utah, North Dakota, Northern Arizona and Weber State. ISU received four first place votes in the media poll out of 30 ballots cast.
