Seniors Shine in a 79-64 Win Over Portland State

Box Score

POCATELLO, Idaho - Four Bengal seniors scored in double figures to lead Idaho State to a 79-64 win over Portland State in the final regular-season game of 2013-14 and the final home game their career.

"All five seniors had a great game," Head Coach Seton Sobolewski said. "We played really great in the second half and played very well. It was fun to see them go out the right way."

Lindsey Reed scored a game-high 21 points followed by Kara Jenkins who scored 17 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Jessica Tingey scored 16 for the Bengals and Sheryl Bitter finished with 11.

Idaho State took an early 6-0 lead before Portland State went on a 16-3 run to take a 16-9 lead on a 3-pointer by Mikaela Rivard with 12:29 left in the half.

PSU extended its lead to 23-14 with 7:38 left on a jumper by Delanie Parry.

The Bengals then went on a 13-4 run to tie the game at 27 on a layup by Reed with 3:10 left in the half.

ISU and PSU traded leads but the Vikings took a 33-32 lead with four seconds left in the half on two free throws Lariel Powell.

The second half started much the way the first half ended, with the two teams trading baskets and leads.

Bitter hit a 3-pointer with 16:01 to play to give ISU a 45-42 lead. The Bengals never trailed again.

The Vikings were able to keep the game close until a layup by Rebecca Schrimpsher kicked off a 15-0 run to give the Bengals a 74-56 lead with 2:34 left in the game.

Kate Lanz was able to cut the ISU lead to 76-62 with just under a minute to play but Reed hit her last shot attempted ever in Reed Gym, a 3-pointer, to give the Bengals a 79-62 lead.

"What a big shot by Lindsey," Sobolewski said. "She came to the bench when I subbed her out for the last time and I said 'That's the way you go out.' She struggled in the first half but it put a smile on my face to see her make that shot."

A PSU jumper in the final seconds set the final score at 79-64.

The Bengals shot 43.9 percent on the night including 48.1 percent from the three-point line. Five Bengals tallied assists, with Jenkins leading the way with seven, for a season-high total of 22.

Idaho State outscored Portland State 26-to-12 in the paint.

Lanz scored 13 points to lead PSU and Lariel Powell scored 12 for Portland State.

The big second half is becoming a trend for ISU. The Bengals have outscored their opponents in the second half 13 of the last 15 games.

The win, along with Montana State's win over Sacramento State, gives Idaho State the fifth seed in next week's Big Sky Conference tournament.

Idaho State will face the fourth seed Eastern Washington, who the Bengals defeated 86-62 earlier this week, Thursday night at 6:30 p. m. (MST) at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
