Box Score OREM, Utah- The Idaho State volleyball team swept Utah Valley University 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 on Friday evening in its first match of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational. The Bengals improved to 4-7 while UVU dropped to 3-9.
"I thought we competed pretty consistently tonight, which I liked a lot," Idaho State coach
Chad Teichert said. "We didn't allow them to score several points in a row like we have in the past. I like the way we competed."
Alydia Fields-Grimm had 10 kills and six digs while
Tressa Lyman had 11 kills and nine digs. ISU hit .311 as a team with 48 kills and 41 assists.
Setter,
Hayley Farrer had 35 assists to lead the Bengal attack.
"I thought Hayley made a lot of good choices and decisions," Teichert said. "She made a few plays where I thought I was watching Lori (Mendenhall-Lee) out there."
Teichert said that Friday night was the best his team has played from start to finish.
After taking the first two sets from the Wolverines, the Bengals fell behind early in the final game. That is when Fields-Grimm stepped up and sparked the ISU rally. She earned back-to-back services aces to give ISU a 12-10 lead. It was the first lead of the set for the Bengals and they never looked back.
In set three, Fields-Grimm had four kills on six attacks to go along with three digs and her two aces. She hit .667 in the set.
"It was huge," Teichert said on the play of Fields-Grimm in set three. "That was awesome. She played well the entire match but extremely well in set three."
As a team the Bengals hit .394 with 15 kills and only two errors in the final set.
"That is off the charts good," Teichert said. "It is really impressive. I liked that a lot."
Teichert added that he was pleased with the play of
Makenzie Filer who had eight kills.
Idaho State continues play at the UVU La Quinta Inn and Suites Invitational with a 10 a.m. match vs. Portland and a 4:30 p.m. contest against UC Riverside.
