By Matt Gittins, ISU Sports InformationMISSOULA, Montana – The Idaho State women's basketball team (7-8, 2-2) battled tough with the University of Montana before the home team eventually pulled away for the 77-65 victory Saturday at Dahlberg Arena.
"I felt like it was a really competitive game," Head Coach
Seton Sobolewski said. "We did some good things and I our effort was really good. We are young and the teams like Montana make you pay for the mistakes you make."
The Griz led the game start to finish but the Bengals kept the contest within single digits for much of the afternoon including trailing just 54-48 with 10:31 left in the game. Montana would respond with a 17-7 run to stretch the lead to 16 and hold on for the win.
"Montana (54.2%) shot the ball really well tonight," Sobolewski said. "When we left them open they made shots and they also made some tough shots right at the end of the shot clock."
Apiphany Woods led the Bengals in scoring for the fourth consecutive game collecting 21 points and a career-high eight rebounds. The junior forward also led the team with four assists.
"I thought she (Woods) really stepped up to the challenge," Sobolewski said. "She had some really nice offensive board put backs and tough finishes."
Grace Kenyon added 18 points and six rebounds while
Rebecca Schrimpsher chipped in with eight points.
The Bengals return to Pocatello for a pair of home games next week. ISU welcomes Southern Utah to the Idaho Central Credit Union Court inside Reed Gym on Thursday January 15 at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Northern Arizona on Saturday January 17 at 2 p.m.
