Box Score PDFGRAND FORKS, N.D. – Idaho State soccer's furious second-half comeback fell short Sunday afternoon as the Bengals fell to North Dakota 3-2. ISU scored two goals in less than a minute to cut UND's lead to one, but the three-goal deficit was too large for the Bengals to overcome.
Sophomore forward
Maria Sanchez scored both goals for the Benagls, converting on a penalty kick in the 84th minute and then chipped her 12th goal of the season over UND's goalie 18 seconds later.
In the first half, both the Bengals and UND recorded seven shots on goal, but North Dakota capitalized on its opportunities and was able to score three goals in less than 10 minutes. ISU headed into halftime facing a three-goal deficit.
Head Coach
Allison Gibson made significant changes to the Bengal lineup in the second half, starting all freshmen and sophomores for the final 45 minutes. ISU outshot UND 14-11 in the second half, including 8-2 on goal and outscored UND 2-0 in the last 45 minutes.
"We went with a 100 percent freshmen/sophomore line in the second half, with Maria being the only returner on the field," Gibson said. "That group won the second half 2-0. It gave us the first bit of hope we've seen in a few weeks. I'm very proud of the way my entire team handled the second half."
Idaho State heads out on the road for its third-straight game Friday, Oct. 9 at Portland State at 5 p.m. MST in Portland, Ore.
