Softball Beats Mississippi Valley; Battles No. 7 ULL Tough

Vicky Galasso became the ISU all-time hits leader today.

POCATELLO, Idaho- Day two of the Mardi Gras Classic at Louisiana Lafayette resulted in the best softball Idaho State has played through nine games. The Bengals defeated Mississippi Valley 16-0 in five innings and lost to No. 7 Louisiana Lafayette 3-0. ISU closes out play in Louisiana with a 10:30 am (MDT) contest against Louisiana Lafayette.

"This was our best day of the season," Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. "We played Bengal ball which is competitive with high energy."

The ISU pitching staff of Bailey Foster and Sophie Slagle were impressive in their outings. Foster pitched ISU to the win over Mississippi Valley by allowing only four hits, one walk while striking out four. Slagle went the distance against ULL, allowing seven hits, three runs, two earned, five walks and one strike out.

"I am really proud of our pitching staff," Wright said. "Both Bailey and Sophie threw well today."

Offensively, ISU had 19 hits on the day with 13 coming in the win over Mississippi Valley. Micheala Taylor had four hits and scored three runs in eight at-bats. Vicky Galasso, Kacie Burnett and Hailey Breakwell all had three hits and Katelyn Marquez was two-for-five. Burnett scored four runs, had five RBIs and had an inside the park grand slam vs. Mississippi Valley.

"I thought Vicky, Micheala and Kacie all played great," Wright said.

Galasso became the ISU all-time hits leader in the ULL game. She now has 197 hits for her career, breaking Terah Blackwell's record of 196 that was set last season.

Idaho State 16 Mississippi Valley 0 (5 innings)
The Idaho State softball team opened day 2 of the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by No. 7 Louisiana Lafayette by beating Mississippi Valley 16-0 in five innings. The 16 runs are the second most a Bengal softball team has scored in a game since the program was brought back in 2007.

ISU scored its 16 runs on 13 hits. Taylor was three-for-four and scored three runs.  Burnett was two-for-five with an inside the park grand slam, five RBIs and four runs scored and Breakwell was two-for-three with one RBI and one run scored. Nine different Bengals recorded hits in the game.

ISU scored three runs in the first inning and then exploded for 11 runs in the second to lead 14-0. The runs in the first inning were scored on an RBI single by Vicky Galasso and an RBI double by Breakwell. Burnett also scored on an error by Mississippi Valley.

The second inning was highlighted by Burnett's inside the park grand slam. ISU scored its 11 runs on only five hits. Idaho State added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 16-0.

No. 7 Louisiana Lafayette 3 Idaho State 0
Idaho State had six hits in the game with two coming from Galasso. After two scoreless innings, ULL scored two runs in the third off two hits and one ISU error.

ISU threatened in the third, fourth and fifth innings but left six runners on base in the three innings.

Louisiana Lafayette scored a run in the fifth inning to take the 3-0 lead.

"We competed again with the No. 7 team in the nation," Wright said. "We had a ton of chances but couldn't quite push one across. That is something we will learn from and take to the Big Sky."
