POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women's tennis team took Portland State right now to the wire despite playing without a key member of the squad Saturday afternoon. The Vikings edged the Bengals 4-3 at Reed Gym.
Typical number one singles player
Kasey Bacon was not able to play due to injury so each of the women had to slide up in the rotation. The Bengals did not let the tall task at hand intimidate them as they battle the Vikings tough all afternoon.
The two teams split the singles matches with
Marian Tangarife,
Laura Theus and
Laura Gutierrez each collecting victories. Tangarife improved to 3-1 in singles play on the season while Theus battled back from a 6-3 defeat in set one to come away with a three-set win (3-6, 6-1, 6-4).
"Without Kasey I think the team really rose to the occasion today," Assistant Coach
Gretchen Maloney said. "They played with a lot of heart out there."
The difference came down to the doubles matches where PSU captured the deciding point.
ISU returns to the court next week when they travel to take on Boise State on Friday before returning home for a pair of Big Sky Conference weekend matches against Idaho and Eastern Washington.
