SANTA CLARA, Calif. –
The Idaho State women's basketball team fell to Santa Clara 82-78 Friday afternoon at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif. ISU went ice cold in the fourth quarter, shooting 26.7 percent as the Broncos surged ahead with a 32-15 run to overtake the Bengals in the final minutes of the game.

Four Bengals finished in double figures led by freshman guard Estefania Ors with 23 points, five rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes of play. Ors was 7-of-9 from the field including 2-of-4 from beyond-the-arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Isabel Vara de Rey added a career-high 17 points, sophomore guard Grace Kenyon added 11 and sophomore guard Saylair Grandon chipped in a career-high 10.

Idaho State (0-1) led by seven points, 41-34, at the half after shooting 46.7 percent in the first 20 minutes. Ors paced the Bengals in the first half with 12 points off a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in her first career game. ISU held Santa Clara (1-0) to 34.6 percent shooting, but the Broncos converted 16-of-19 at the charity strip to keep the Bengals within striking distance.

"Estefania had an amazing game," Head Coach Seton Sobolewski said. "It's one of the best first game performances I have ever seen out of a freshman."

The Bengals continued to roll in the third quarter, shooting 57.1 percent for 22 points and the 63-50 lead. Idaho State forced the Broncos to shoot a dismal 12.5 percent in the third as SCU finished 1-of-8 from the field. Yet 11 Bengal fouls sent Santa Clara to the line 16 times. 13 of the Broncos' 16 third-quarter points came from the line while the Bengals started to find themselves in foul trouble. By the end of the third quarter, four Bengals had three or more fouls while sophomore guard Saylair Grandon picked up her fifth foul with just over two minutes remaining in the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Bengals struggled to get into an offensive rhythm as three more Bengals retired to the bench with five fouls: Lindsay Brown, Freya Newton and Sai Tapasa. With three of ISU's starters out, Vara de Rey and Ors stepped up to halt the Broncos' fourth-quarter run as the duo combined for all of ISU's 15 fourth-quarter points.

Santa Clara shot 73.3 percent from the field in the final quarter for 32 points and led ISU by seven, 79-72 with 38 second remaining. A trey from Vara de Rey at the 36 second mark cut the lead to 4, and another Vara de Rey trey with five second left cut the lead to 2, 80-78. Vara de Rey fouled immediately on the inbound to stop the clock, putting Santa Clara's Emily Wolph on the line. Wolph converted both for a four-point lead 82-78, and Ors' last-second three was off the mark, giving the Broncos the win.

Four players finished in double figures for the Broncos, led by Wolph with 20. Lori Parkinson led the rebounding effort with a game-high 10.

"It's difficult to win a basketball game when your opponent shoots 48 free throws and four players foul out without playing any type of pressure defense," Sobolewski said.

Idaho State is back in action Monday, Nov. 14 at No. 25 Oregon State at 7 p.m. MST.
