Bengals Fall in OT to Eastern Kentucky

 
POCATELLO, Idaho- Despite a career-high of 25 points from Brandon Boyd, the Idaho State men's basketball team lost 91-82 to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon in Cancun, Mexico. Boyd finished with 25 points on nine of 16 shooting. He was 4-of-6 from the three-point line.

Geno Luzcando had 20 points on 8-13 shooting and 11 rebounds. Gary Chivichyan had 11 points and Novak Topalovic had 10 points and nine rebounds.

ISU shot 51 percent from the field but committed 30 turnovers. The Bengals were 12-26 from the three-point line and had 35 rebounds.

"We played hard, together and spirited but the big deal in the ball game was too many turnovers," Idaho State coach Bill Evans said. "You have no chance to win the game when you turn it over that much. "

Idaho State led for 26 minutes of the game and held at 38-35 lead at halftime. The Bengals opened up a 45-35 lead in the first two minutes of the second half following a Boyd dunk. Boyd later hit a 3-pointer to give ISU a 50-42 lead with 14:51 to play in regulation.

EKU got within two points at 52-50 but the Bengals extended the lead 59-52 follow a Luzcando free throw with 9:48 remaining. Eastern Kentucky tied the game at 59 with 7:21 to play in regulation. Both teams exchanged leads over the final seven minutes. Luzcando gave ISU a 71-69 lead on a layup with 46 seconds to play but Eastern Kentucky tied the game at 71 with a basket with eight seconds left.

The overtime period saw each team exchange 3-pointers in the first two minutes. EKU hit the go-ahead three to take an 80-77 lead and the Bengals never recovered. Eastern Kentucky was 6-6 in the final 44 seconds of overtime to seal the victory.

Idaho State plays its final game in Cancun Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. against NJIT.
