Cal State Fullerton Photo Gallery POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team handed Cal State Fullerton its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, winning 3-2 in 10 innings in a tournament at Santa Clara University and lost 13-7 to host school Santa Clara later in the day.
"It was a great team win against Fullerton," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We played a complete game. We played sloppy against Santa Clara and you can't do that and expect to win."
Six Bengals had two hits or more on the day.
Reis Birkett got the start at catcher against Santa Clara and was 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Micheala Taylor,
Sarah Hayes and
Kacie Burnett all had three hits while
Maddy Hickman and
Katelyn Marquez each had two.
Ashlyn Ames went 1-1 and teammates
Mariah Mulcahy and
Bailey Foster also saw time in the circle. Ames tossed 13 innings, scattered 13 hits, struck out two and walked six.
Idaho State 3 Santa Clara 2Â ISU managed only five hits but got solid pitching from Ames, who scattered 10 hits in a complete-game. The sophomore pitcher walked four and allowed two runs.
Marquez was 2-4 with an RBI. Hickman was 1-4 with an RBI and Taylor was 1-3 with one run scored. Hayes added the Bengals other hit of the game.
Kacie Burnett and
Alex Portesi each scored a run.
The Bengals took advantage of a first-inning Fullerton error to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Taylor reached on an error and Hickman drove her in with an RBI double.
ISU extended its lead to 2-0 in the second inning. Portesi led off with a walk and she later scored on an RBI single by Marquez. Fullerton tied the game at two in the seventh inning.
After three scoreless extra innings, Burnett started the 10
th at second base. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor and scored the winning run on a passed ball.
Santa Clara 13 Idaho State 7Idaho State scored its seven runs in the first two innings. Portesi had an infield RBI in the first inning that scored Burnett. Santa Clara scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning but ISU responded with six runs in the top of the second.
The Bengals took advantage of two Santa Clara errors and had five hits in the inning. Hayes opened the inning with a single up the middle and after stealing second, Birkett singled her home with a single to right field.
Marquez then reached base on a walk and Burnett followed with a bunt to third base, allowing Birkett to score and Marquez to advance to third after an error. Taylor then drove home Marquez on a sacrifice RBI and Burnett scored on a Hickman RBI double to right-center.
Ashley Morris had an RBI single later inning the inning and Ames, who reached base on a walk scored on a Santa Clara defensive miscue for the final run of the inning.
Santa Clara then scored three runs in the bottom of the second, four in the third and three in the sixth to seal the victory.
ISU had 13 hits and two errors while Santa Clara had 10 hits and three errors.
The Bengals play Seattle U at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
