POCATELLO, Idaho – Ashlyn Ames pitched the Idaho State softball team to an 8-0 shutout win over Seattle U on Sunday morning in the final game of the Santa Clara Tournament at Santa Clara University. Ames allowed only four hits, one walk and one strikeout in the victory.
ISU had 13 hits, led by
Maddy Hickman's 3-3 day and one RBI.
Alex Portesi was 2-4 with two RBIs while
Kacie Burnett and
Micheala Taylor were also 2-4.
Ames was 1-3 with two RBIs.
Sarah Hayes had a hit and an RBI while
Ashley Morris had a double and one RBI.
"We played focused and finished the game," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We had timely hitting with solid pitching and defense."
After two scoreless innings, ISU scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth inning. The Bengals then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory.
The scoring started when Burnett reached base on an infield single and Taylor followed by reaching base on a bunt. Hickman then loaded the bases on a single to right field. Portesi later drove in the first run on a single up the middle and Hayes drove in Hickman on an infield single.
In the fourth inning, Hickman had an RBI single to centerfield that scored Burnett and Ames walked with the bases loaded to put ISU on top 4-0 in the fourth inning. The final run of the inning came when Portesi grounded out to second base.
Taylor started the scoring in the sixth inning when she reached base on an error. Hickman then walked and one batter later and Ames singled up the middle for the first run.
Jennie Murillo brought home the second run of the inning when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Morris doubled to right field to score the game-ending run.
The Bengals return to the state of California Feb. 26-28 for a tournament at UC Davis. ISU is set to face Iowa State, UC Davis, South Dakota and New Mexico.
