POCATELLO, Idaho- Both games came down to the final at bat but unfortunately for the Idaho State softball team the results did not end in its favor. In the first day of the UC Davis Softball Tournament, the Idaho State softball team lost 4-2 to Iowa State and 2-1 to Iowa State.
Against Iowa State, the Bengals had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but was only able to manage one run in the inning. Against UC Davis, the score was tied at one when the Aggies hit a walk-off double to earn the victory.
The Bengals managed only nine hits on the day.
Kacie Burnett and
Micheala Taylor combined for five hits as Burnett had three and one RBI and Taylor had two, one RBI and one run scored.
"We played passive all day," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We didn't take advantage of opportunities when we had runners in scoring position."
The Bengal pitching staff was solid all day as
Sophie Slagle and
Ashlyn Ames combined for a 1.58 era. Ames took the loss against Iowa State as she went the distance, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs, four walks and one strikeout. Slagle took the loss against UC Davis, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks and striking out five.
In the first game of the day against Iowa State, the Bengals fell behind 4-0 after the top of the third inning. ISU got its first run in the bottom half of the third when Taylor had an RBI double, driving home
Katelyn Marquez, who walked with one out.
In the bottom of the seventh ISU loaded the bases with one out. Burnett had an RBI single but the Iowa State pitching staff retired the next two batters to seal the win.
In the loss to UC Davis, ISU scored its only run of the game in the first inning. Taylor led off with a single and later scored when
Dara Kolar walked with the bases loaded.
UC Davis scored its first run in the second inning and then with one out in the bottom of the seventh won the game on a walk off double.
Idaho State plays New Mexico and South Dakota on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. mountain time.
