Softball Beats South Dakota; Falls to New Mexico

 
POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split day two of the UC Davis Invitational, beating South Dakota 2-1 and losing to New Mexico 4-2. The Bengals had 12 hits on the day with Micheala Taylor leading the attack with 4-7 day with one run scored.

Maddy Hickman was 2-5 with a home run, double and one run scored and Alex Portesi had two hits.

Sophie Slagle earned the win against South Dakota, pitching a complete game and allowing three hits, one run, four strike outs and three walks. Ashlyn Ames took the loss against New Mexico. She pitched two innings, allowed six hits, four runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

In the win over South Dakota, Taylor was 2-4 and scored a run while Portesi was 2-3 with an RBI.

Taylor led off the scoring in the top of the first inning with a lead-off single to left-center. Then with two outs, Portesi drove in Taylor on an infield single.

South Dakota tied the game at one in the fourth inning but ISU took the lead for good in the fifth when Hickman hit a two-out solo homer over the right field fence.

In the first game of the day, New Mexico scored its four runs in the second inning. Freshman Mariah Mulcahy pitched the final five innings and allowed only one hit while striking out three and walking five.

ISU scored its first run of the game against New Mexico in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one-out Hickman doubled to right-center and Reis Birkett later singled home Kaitlyn Spohrer, who pinch ran for Hickman.

The Bengals once again rallied in the bottom of the seventh to have a chance to win the game. With one out Molly Nutt reached base on a UNM throwing error and Sarah Hayes reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Nutt to move to second on another Lobo miscue. Taylor singled to load the bases and Katlyn Marquez grounded out for the Bengals first and only run of the inning.

The Bengals conclude the UC Davis tournament Sunday at 10 a.m. mountain time vs. New Mexico.
