Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split the opening day of the Boise State Springhill Suites Invitational, beating Boise State 11-0 in five innings in game 1 and losing 6-4 in the final game of the day.
The Bengal offense had a solid afternoon, hitting .396 with 19 hits and 15 RBIs.
Ashley Morris led the attack with a 4-6 afternoon. She had three RBIs and scored one run.
Kacie Burnett was 3-6 with two runs scored and one RBI. Nine different Bengals had hits on the afternoon.
Sophie Slagle earned the win in game 1, tossing five innings, striking out three with no walks and scattering five hits.
Ashlyn Ames took the loss in game 2, allowing 11 hits, six runs, three earned while striking out three and walking one.
"It was a great start in game one," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "We were aggressive. We hit when we had runners in scoring position and made the plays we had to make."
ISU opened game one against the Broncos with a six run first inning.
Micheala Taylor opened the inning by reaching base on a BSU error. After a sacrifice bunt by
Katelyn Marquez, Burnett reached on an infield single and
Maddy Hickman singled home Taylor for the first run of the game.
Ames followed with an RBI single and Birkett later had a two RBI double down the right field line. Morris also had a two RBI double to left field.
Idaho State scored two runs in the second inning. Burnett had an RBI single and Marquez had a sacrifice fly to left field. Idaho State had one run in the third and two in the fifth inning.
Burnett was 2-3 and scored two runs while Morris was 3-3, scored one run and had two RBIs.
In the 6-4 loss, Boise State jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the third inning. The Bengals committed two errors but scored four runs in the fourth inning. Â ISU was held to five hits.
"In game two we started out back on our heels and got behind early," Letts said. "We battled back but came up short. We need to keep our mind set the same from one game to the next one. We need to keep learning from mistakes that we can control."
Idaho State plays Montana on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Boise in a nonconference matchup.
