POCATELLO, Idaho- Ashlyn Ames had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning and pitched the Bengals to a 6-5 victory over Yale in the first game of the CSUN Mizuno Classic on Friday morning in Northridge, Calif. The Bengals then lost 8-0 to CSUN later in the day.
"We had timely hitting in our win against Yale," Idaho State coach
Candi Letts said. "Cal State Northridge got out fast and we didn't make our adjustments at the plate to keep us in the game. We'll learn and continue to get better in areas that need attention."
In the win over Yale, Ames went the distance in the circle, scattering six, hits, allowing five runs (three earned), three walks and striking out two. Offensively, Ames was 3-4 with four RBIs.
The Bengal offense had 10 hits as
Maddy Hickman was 2-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run scored. Five other Bengals had hits in the win.
Idaho State led 2-0 after the first inning. With one out
Katelyn Marquez singled up the middle and was then driven in by
Kacie Burnett. Burnett later scored on a RBI single by Ames.
Yale tied the game at two in the second inning but the Bengals retook the lead in the third on a solo homer from Hickman. ISU added a run in the sixth when Hickman led off with a double to center field.
Molly Nutt, who was pinch running for Hickman, scored on a single up the middle by Ames.
Yale took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh before ISU rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor led off the seventh with a single up the middle and Marquez reached base on a Yale fielding error. Burnett followed with a fielder's choice and Hickman was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Ames then hit her two-run walk off single to give ISU the victory.
Slagle took the loss against CSUN. She pitched three innings, allowing six hits, five runs while walking one and striking out two.
The Bengal offense was held hitless as CSUN scored two runs in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
ISU continues play at Northridge with a 9:30 a.m. game vs. Loyola Marymount and a 12:30 p.m. game vs. UC Riverside on Saturday.
